New Zealand’s T20 World Cup preparations hit a snag with injuries, but they’ve responded decisively by naming Ben Sears as reserve player. The tournament begins February 7 in India and Sri Lanka, and Sears will rendezvous with the squad in Mumbai this Sunday, as confirmed by NZC on Friday.

The reshuffle stems from Adam Milne’s hamstring tear during SA20 bowling, prompting Kyle Jamieson’s reserve call-up last week. Sears now fills that spot, bringing his recent domestic exploits into the spotlight.

Dominating Super Smash for Wellington, Sears bagged 15 wickets in nine matches, ranking joint-second in round-robin wickets. Head coach Rob Walter lauded his comeback from a prior hamstring injury that marred his summer start.

“Ben’s graft to return to form has paid off—thrilling to watch him excel with the Firebirds,” Walter enthused. “His readiness in India offers vital insurance against further setbacks during the World Cup.”

Group D pits New Zealand against Afghanistan, Canada, South Africa, and UAE, starting with Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8. Squad: Mitchell Santner (capt), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi. Reserve: Ben Sears.

This inclusion fortifies New Zealand’s bowling options, reflecting smart contingency planning as they gear up for subcontinental battles. Expect Sears to be a game-changer if called upon.
