South African cricket faces injury turbulence as Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira are officially dropped from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad. The injuries also bench them for the West Indies T20 series, forcing Cricket South Africa into decisive action.

Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton and all-rounder Tristan Stubbs earn call-ups to bolster the 15-player roster. With the tournament looming from February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka, these changes aim to maintain momentum.

In Group D, Proteas tackle Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and UAE, starting with Canada on February 9 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Departure to India is slated for February 1, led by skipper Aiden Markram.

De Zorzi’s hamstring woes trace back to India’s ODI tour last month, unrelenting despite rehab. Ferreira broke his left collarbone in SA20 action on January 17 between Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals. Veteran David Miller, nursing an adductor injury from Paarl Royals duty, skips the West Indies games—his World Cup spot depends on fitness; Rubin Hermann deputizes.

Lungi Ngidi’s leg recovery progresses positively for World Cup contention. Dewald Brevis, fresh off a gritty 75 amid finger pain, is due for scans. Team assembly in Paarl happens January 23, with SA20 knockout participants integrating January 26, ahead of T20 series from January 27.

This resilient response highlights South Africa’s bench strength, promising an intriguing blend of youth and savvy for the T20 extravaganza.
