  • 60-year-old daily wager sets for home in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, ends up 1,400km away in Bihar

When Latehar DC Abu Imran was informed about her plight, he began a search for her family members and connected with her son who came to Jharkhand with two others. They took her back to Maharashtra on Sunday. Kandulna added, “Similar names of places in two states caused unwarranted suffering to this poor woman. She faced problems as she is only fluent in speaking Marathi.”

What’s in a name? For 60-year-old Mitha Bai Kumbh Phaley, it is a matter of eight months and 1,400 km away from home in a strange land. The Marathi woman was finally reunited with her son, Pandurang Baburao Kumbh Phaley, on Sunday at Latehar district where she was taking refuge since March this year.
Mitha Bai, a daily wager, was stranded at Kolegar, just 15 km away from her home in Aurangabad in Maharashtra in March when the lockdown began. She was looking for a means to return home when she met a group of other migrant workers, who said they were headed to Aurangabad, and accompanied them. However, she ended up 1,400 km away as the labourers were from Aurangabad in Bihar. From there she started roaming in search of her home and reached Latehar in Jharkhand.
Latehar district public relation officer Rohit Kandulna said, “Mitha Bai told us that she met the labourers who thought she wanted to go to Bihar’s Aurangabad… She reached Balumath in Latehar and initially spent three weeks at a government Covid care centre in Barikhap and was later housed at a shelter home in the district.”
