  • Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro has ‘up to twice the battery life’ of the Intel one

Apple today revealed its long-awaited ARM-powered Macs, including a new MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and MacBook Pro. All of them use the new M1 chip, which promises massive gains in performance and decreased power consumption — or at least when running apps optimized for the new hardware. In fact, the company claims its new 13-inch MacBook Pro has “the longest battery life ever on a Mac,” and “up to twice the battery life of the previous generation.”

Performance-wise, the gains are similar to those the company is touting with the MacBook Air. One needs to take that ‘up to’ bit seriously. As I wrote in my post about the MacBook Air, these performance numbers likely reflect gains when using apps that have been specifically developed to run on ARM-based chips. Apple was less clear about how the laptops will perform when running software originally written for Intel processors, though it did say the new Macs would outperform the older Intel ones with integrated graphics in at least some graphically-intensive applications. Then again, I’m not so sure how fair that comparison is either, considering Intel’s latest batch of laptop processors include massive gains in integrated graphics.

  • Apple Design Guru Jonathan Ive Has Left the Company

Sir Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief design officer who is behind the look and feel of the iPhone or iMac that you use today, has formally left Apple as his biography along with photo disappearing from Apple’s Leadership page. British-origin Ive who worked at Apple for almost 30 years in June announced to move on and decided to form an independent design firm called LoveFrom that would treat Apple as its most prestigious client.

Ive is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple’s revival cannot be overstated, from 1998’s ground-breaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care,” Apple CEO Tim Cook had said at that time.

Ive was one of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ closest friends who considered him as a “spiritual partner”. Ive has been the key design figure behind products like the original iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple’s new “spaceship campus”.

Ive’s departure from Apple comes at a crucial time as the tech giant is working on new-look iPhone 12 and maybe its first foldable smartphone.

Born and raised in London, Ive studied design at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and had his work displayed at the Design Museum. After graduation, he was hired by a start-up called Tangerine to work in their industrial design group.

Formally recruited to Apple as a full-time employee in September 1992, Ive was initially apprehensive about leaving Tangerine for Apple as he thought the move from Britain to California would take a toll on his family.

Initial design failures and lack of commercial success during the early 1990s prompted Ive to nearly quit on several occasions.

Late Steve Jobs, who had been ousted by other Apple executives in 1985, staged a return in 1997 and went straight to Ive, recruiting him in taking the firm to a different direction.

Jobs made him senior vice president of industrial design and Ive went on to head the design team responsible for most of the company’s significant hardware products.

  • Apple Special Event Scheduled For December 2 to Honour Favourite Apps and Games of 2019

Apple took to Twitter to announce that it will hold a special event on December 2 in New York City where the iPhone maker will honour their favourite apps and games of 2019. It is, however, not clear from Apple’s Twitter post whether the company will make any announcement or will felicitate developers of the apps and games.

The tagline of the invitation by Apple reads, “Loved by millions. Created by the best.” It further mentioned, “Join us for an Apple special event honouring our favourite apps and games of 2019.” The Tweet posted by Lifewire Tech’s Lance Ulanoff features a golden-coloured App Store logo. According to a report by CNBC, the Apple special event will be held at PM ET (2.30AM IST).

Most of the events by Apple are usually live-streamed, however, it is still not known whether the company would stream the December 2 Apple special event live. Apart from the tweet, there is no update regarding the Apple special event on December 2 on the company’s website. Apple usually organises Apple Design Awards to felicitate the best-looking apps but the upcoming event seems to be something happening for the first time.

  • APPLE MIGHT LAUNCH AN AFFORDABLE IPHONE SE 2 WITH A13 PROCESSOR AND 3 GB RAM

After several leaks and rumours, there’s one more to add to the list about the iPhone SE’s successor. According to an analyst, Apple could launch its next affordable iPhone SE update early next year.

Apple had terminated the sales of iPhone SE in India not too long ago as the company was not exactly performing well in the market and suffered a dip in sales. But the good news is, as per the known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will launch an affordable iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of the next year and it might feature a newer A13 processor.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, Kuo has also confirmed that this upcoming iPhone will be a cheaper iPhone and is likely to offer up to 3 GB RAM. On the design front, the upcoming handset is expected to feature chassis at the back that resembles iPhone 8’s(Review) design. The iPhone SE 2 is speculated to a mirror the iPhone 8 even in with hardware specifications. There is still no word as to how much will this phone cost, but it is expected to be cheaper than the company’s already existing iPhone lineup.
As per the analyst, the company might sell up to 30-40 million units across 2020.

An old report by Nikkei also hinted that Apple might launch a cheaper version of the iPhone 8 and as per this recent prediction by Kuo, it seems like the company is going to unveil this device soon. As per the Nikkei report, this iPhone is likely to feature a 4.7-inch LCD display.

As per a report by Bloomberg, iPhone SE 2 might also come with a Face ID instead of the fingerprint sensing Touch ID technology.

Kuo also hints that Apple might target iPhone 6 users for its upcoming iPhone SE 2 as these users do not prioritise new features like Face ID or multi-camera modules over the fast iPhone experience. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus did not receieve the latest iOS 13 update.
