  • From BJP Chief to Cabinet: JP Nadda returns to Modi’s inner circle |

New Delhi: After leading the BJP as its national president for more than four years, JP Nadda returned to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council of ministers on Sunday.

The 63-year old took oath as a Cabinet minister, becoming the sole representative from Himachal Pradesh in the BJP-led government. It is not yet known which ministry will be assigned to him.

He served as Union health minister in Modi’s first term from November 9, 2014, to May 30, 2019.

“Grateful to PM Narendra Modi ji for reposing faith in me. Under Modi ji’s visionary leadership, India has achieved remarkable milestones, fostering growth, innovation, and prosperity,” Nadda said in post on X.

“I pledge to work tirelessly with utmost dedication and sincerity to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to me. Together, we will embark on a journey toward a brighter, more inclusive future for every citizen, ensuring that no one is left behind on our journey of progress and development,” he added.

Nadda, who holds a degree in law, started his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He became president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, in 1991.

He held various key positions in the BJP, headed its election campaign in a host of states — from Bihar to Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Punjab. He also served as a minister in BJP’s governments in his home state of Himachal Pradesh.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and made a member of the BJP’s parliamentary board in 2014 when Amit Shah took over as party president.

After the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Nadda was made the BJP’s working president. He was later elevated to the position of BJP president in January 2020 after Shah, the then BJP chief, was appointed as Union home minister.

Nadda took over as BJP chief at a time when the party was witnessing vigorous challenges from a united opposition in assembly elections in several states amid signs that it needed to rework its electoral strategy.

Despite its overwhelming win in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP suffered several defeats in assembly polls since 2018, except in Haryana where it formed a government in an alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party.

The BJP won new allies and strung up a series of impressive assembly wins on Nadda’s watch. During his term as BJP chief, the party consolidated its strongholds and expanded its footprints despite some occasional setbacks.

With his term coming to an end in June, the low-key leader from Himachal Pradesh would have liked to demit office on the high of having achieved yet another impressive Lok Sabha poll win but the BJP’s victory in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls came with reduced numbers. The party fell short of a majority on its own as it won just 240 seats in the parliamentary polls.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats, setting the course for a third consecutive term as prime minister for Modi despite the opposition’s resurgence.

Nadda is considered within the party an epitome of political correctness, with his manners unfailingly polite in public and his attacks on rivals never triggering any unseemly controversy.

He enjoys warm relations with Modi, who was for a long time in charge of the party’s affairs in Himachal Pradesh.

  • Third eye: Protem Speaker?

As the new Lok Sabha is likely to have its first sitting soon, the question is who will become protem Speaker. Since this role usually goes to the seniormost MP, the focus was on Virender Kumar of BJP and Kodikunnil Suresh of Congress – the two leaders belonging to the Dalit community, with both in their eighth term. But with Kumar now becoming a minister, will the ruling side let Kodikunnil act as protem Speaker or pick a comparatively junior one from the NDA side for the job? Walk to RememberAlmost all wouldbe ministers, who were called to the PM’s residence for tea , came in their cars. There was one, who had quit Congress to join BJP but lost the election, who walked up to the house as his car was stuck in heavy traffic. The aim was to reach on time. Post and Delete BJP’s Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who lost election to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, on Sunday deleted a post on X that said that his 18year stint in public service has come to an end. He later said what he meant to say was that his 18year stint as an MP and three years as Union minister has come to an end.AllUttar PradeshMaharashtraTamil NaduWest BengalBiharKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKeralaMadhya PradeshRajasthanDelhiOther States

  • DNA Exclusive: Decoding BJP’s challenges in ensuring government sustainability |

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to take charge as PM for the third time after NDA alliance partners chose him as a leader. All parties of the NDA are going to meet the president on Friday to give an official letter. This time BJP may face challenges because the party need to form a government with the help of alliance partners because the saffron party won 240 seats on its own which is less than a majority. Modi is not BJP’s first Prime Minister who is going to become PM for the third time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee has also taken an oath as BJP’s PM three times.

In today’s DNA, Sourabh Raaj Jain analysed the challenges going to be faced by the BJP due to the alliance government. The Zee News anchor called it Modi’s ‘Atal Test.’

Atal Bihari Vajpayee did not complete his tenure in the first and second terms, but he got this good fortune in the third term. While Modi has completed the first and second terms, the third good fortune is in question. In 1999, the BJP had 182 seats, less than the majority, yet Vajpayee had completed 5 years by taking 19 parties together. Today BJP has 240 seats, but Modi does not have the experience to pull the coalition government. He has run governments with the majority of the BJP for the last two terms.

  • 70% seats won by Congress saw high voter turnout

The Congress’ resurgence coincides with high voter turnout in the constituencies where it won, in a Lok Sabha election that has reported an overall dip in votes cast from 2019. While the vote share per candidate is yet to be made public by the Election Commission, it is clear that of the nearly 100 seats where the Congress has scored victory, most seats reported a high voter turnout of 6570% or more. As many as 68 of the 98 seats where the Congress was leading prominently or seen winning on the counting day have reported a voter turnout of over 65%, EC data show. Of these, 38 posted a turnout of more than 70% — from 92% at Dhubri in Assam that elected Rakibul Hussain with a margin of 9.5 lakh votes, to 84% in Lakshadweep. Wayanad, which Rahul Gandhi won with a 3.6 lakh vote margin, reported a 73.5% voter turnout. Pradyut Bordoloi retained his seat in Nagaon which reported a near 85% voter turnout. In BJP stronghold Gujarat, Geniben Nagaji Thakor of the Congress broke through and won the party its sole Lok Sabha seat in Banaskantha, which reported a near 70% turnout. Inner Manipur, with its 80% turnout, brought in Congress’ Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. Even overall trends on turnout bear out this pattern. When seen conversely, of the 58 seats across the seven phases which reported a poor voter turnout – lower than 55% – only seven have gone with the Congress while as many as 30 have been won by the BJP. BJP’s Vivek Thakur won Nawada in Bihar which posted a 43% turnout, while Ravi Shankar Prasad scored a victory in Patna Sahib where only about 46% voters turned out to vote. Ajay Tamta of the BJP scored victory in Almora in Uttarakhand which recorded a 48.7% turnout. In all, among the ten constituencies which reported the lowest turnout, six have gone to BJP. In contrast, three of the ten constituencies with highest turnout have gone to the Congress, while the TDP has won four. AllUttar PradeshMaharashtraTamil NaduWest BengalBiharKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKeralaMadhya PradeshRajasthanDelhiOther StatesThe BJP has only one of these ten — Bishnupur in West Bengal which recorded an 85% turnout where BJP’s Soumitra Khan had a 6,000plus lead Tuesday night. For the Congress, votecount wise, after Rakibul Hussain’s 9.5 lakh lead in Dhubri, Sasikanth Senthil has a lead of 5.5 lakh margin in Tiruvallur. In Rohtak, Deepender Singh Hooda was leading with a near 3.4 lakh margin. Kumar Selja recorded a 2.6 lakh margin win in Sirsa, while Hibi Eden retained Ernakulam with a 2.5 lakh margin. However, while there is a clearly high voter turnout in seats wrested by the Congress, there is a question that arises on the female voters and its support to the grand old party

Revanna’s son Prajwal, embroiled in the state’s infamous sex video case, is currently in SIT custody. The JDS MP, who is seeking reelection from Hassan as NDA candidate, had fled the country after pen drives containing sex videos allegedly involving him were distributed in his constituency days before the polling in the general election. He was arrested upon his return from Germany on Friday. A special court in the city remanded him to police custody till June 6. The SIT probing the sex abuse case is parallelly pursuing a case of abduction of a survivor by Revanna’s family. Revanna Jr’s mother Bhavani was due to be questioned on Saturday, but she has disappeared since. The SIT had issued a notice to Bhavani asking her to be present at her home on June 1 as there was a need to question her in the kidnap case.

  • From Punjab To MP To Maharashtra, Exodus Continues In Congress Benefiting BJP.

New Delhi: Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the exodus in the Congress has continued to hurt the grand old party. What is surprising is that even in states like Punjab or Maharashtra where the party stands a good chance against the NDA, the Congress leaders are switching to the BJP. On Tuesday alone, three Congress leaders – three-time Lok Sabha MP from Punjab Raveent Singh Bittu, former Congress MLA Shashank Bhargava in Madhya Pradesh and senior Congress leader Namdeo Usendi in Maharashtra joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

    Raveena Singh Bittu In Punjab

BJP gained a notable boost in Punjab on Tuesday with the joining of three-term Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu. His decision to switch to the BJP underscores shifting political dynamics in Punjab. Bittu is a grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beam Singh and a current MP from Ludhiana.

On joining the BJP after quitting Congress, Ravneet Singh Bittu praised PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their good work in the development of the country. “The Prime Minister and the Home Minister always took it positively whenever I raised the issues of Punjab. We want to take Punjab forward. When the country is benefitting, why should Punjab be left behind?” Bittu said.

After joining the party, Ravneet Singh Bittu went to meet BJP national president JP Nadda at his residence in Delhi. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja said that this is a sad moment for the party but his decision will not affect the party. “I am deeply hurt by the way Ravneet Singh Bittu has left the party but it will cause no damage to the party. Even if he wins, he will be reduced to a mere MP. But what he has left behind is far more significant- his identity as Sardar Beant Singh's grandson, who was a strong pillar of the Congress,” Raja said.

    Shashank Bhargava From Madhya Pradesh

Former Congress MLA Shashank Bhargava joined BJP in Bhopal in the presence of Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav, former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and state BJP chief VD Sharma. As former Congress MLA Shashank Bhargava joined the party, Chouhan claimed that the BJP is the only party through which the country and people can served.

    Namdeo Use In Maharashtra

The senior Congress leader Namdeo Usend from Nagpur resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party today and later joined the BJP. This comes amid the talks in the Maha Vikas Aghadi about the seat sharing for the Lok Sabha polls.
