  • Four-member committee to research Jharkhand ropeway tragedy

    RANCHI: The Jharkhand Government on Tuesday shaped a four-member committee to research the ropeway tragedy which happened at Trikut Hills in Deoghar on April 10, claiming three lives. The Secretary of Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, Amitabh Kaushal, and representatives nominated by National Highways, Infrastructure Development Corporation and Indian Institute of Technology-ISM, Dhanbad every might be its members.

  • Carry out security audit of all ropeway tasks: MHA to states and UTs

    NEW DELHI: In the wake of the Deoghar ropeway accident, the Centre on Tuesday requested all states to hold out a security audit of every ropeway undertaking and put in place commonplace working procedures to cope with such emergencies.

    In a communication to all states and Union territories, Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla additionally mentioned that for every ropeway undertaking, a upkeep guide and programme should be in place in order that the security requirements conform to good business practices and such incidents don’t recur.

  • Bokaro airport getting ready start operations by 2021

    Bokaro can hope to fly high from next year as the upcoming airport in the steel town is gearing up to host commercial flights to Patna and Calcutta.

    This will be the second airport under UDAN, the centrally sponsored regional air-connectivity scheme, after Deoghar airport which too is in the final stages of commencement.

    Last week, Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced on Twitter that Bokaro strip, being prepared at a cost of Rs 46 crore, is ready to host civilian flights. “Bokaro airport presently manages non-scheduled flights. Once civil operations start it will connect the steel city to Patna and Kolkata under RCS-UDAN,” the AAI said.

    The airport is owned by domestic steel major SAIL. In April 2018, SAIL signed a pact with AAI and the Union civil aviation ministry for using three of the PSU’s airstrips — Rourkela (West Bengal), Bokaro (Jharkhand) and Burnpur (Odisha) — under UDAN.

    Soon after, work began to revamp the Bokaro airport. The project included the construction of a terminal building with a peak-hour passenger capacity of 300 along with strengthening and re-carpeting the runway, apron and taxi track for ATR-72 aircraft.

  • Jharkhand ranks third in country in reducing malaria cases: WHO

    With a nearly 35% decline in malaria cases in 2019, Jharkhand has finished third in the malaria elimination program in the country. The ranking was awarded on the basis of the ‘World Malaria Report 2020’ prepared by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The survey was conducted based on mathematical projections of the progress made by endemic zones in reducing the malaria burden.
    According to the report, a total of 34.96% dip in malaria cases was reported across the state in 2019 in comparison to 2018. The north-eastern state of Meghalaya topped the chart by reducing malaria cases by 59%, followed by Odisha at 40%.
    Talking to TOI, state health secretary Nitin Madan Kulkarni said: “This is a result of regular surveillance and the proper implementation of the ‘High Burden to High Impact’ programme initiated by the WHO. The program was implemented across the country under the National Framework of Malaria Elimination, which is being run by the Union government.”
    On being asked about the measures taken by the state government to control malaria, Kulkarni said: “Mass fever surveys, distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and regular indoor residual spraying at breeding points in endemic districts helped us achieve the feat and we are sure that malaria will be eliminated by 2030, in tandem with the Union government’s target.”
    Notably, 11,071 malaria cases have been detected in the state this year. Whereas, 31,478 cases were reported last year between January and October. This means that the state has witnessed a further decline of 64% in malaria cases.
    On being contacted, state malaria officer Dr S N Jha said: “The results are very encouraging and Latehar and Deoghar districts have shown immense improvement with a surveillance rate of more than 10%. We had set a target of covering 47,38,925 persons across 4,098 villages from May to October, out of which more than 70% have been covered. We have distributed over 55 lakh LLINs received from the Centre and more than 20 lakh LLINs are yet to be distributed.”

  • Deoghar frames building norms keeping airport in mind

    Construction of buildings in the Deoghar municipality region will now be regulated in view of the upcoming international airport in the temple town to facilitate smooth flying operations. 

    Officials of Deoghar Municipal Corporation and Airports Authority of India on Thursday jointly announced the introduction of a color-coded zoning map in the entire region as per norms prescribed by the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

    After missing the November deadline, flight operations from Deoghar airport is now expected to begin in the next couple of months.

    Talking to the media, Deoghar town commissioner S.K. Lal said the entire municipal area has been divided into seven colour-coded zones. “In red category, no civil work can take place without the prior approval of AAI. In yellow zone, maximum height of a building has been capped at 265 metre above the mean sea level, 275metre in pink zone, 285metre in grey zone, 295metre in blue zone, 325metre in orange zone, 355metre in green zone and 385metre in light blue zone. Any kind of construction will now have to abide by these restrictions and due clearances from AAI and civic body as and where needed.”

    Lal said the initial survey conducted in the entire municipal area revealed that currently none of the buildings are violating the colour coded norms.

    “Once the airport starts operating, there will be a boom in purchase of land for setting up hotels, resorts around its periphery and elsewhere. To curb unmindful construction in the interest of safe flying, we are gearing up to streamline the expansion of such activities,” he said, adding that the survey has identified a handful of obstructions in and around the airport which will be cleared on priority basis.

    For example, in Bhandarkela village in ward 34, a few structures are now in the red zone. “There is a toilet building of the municipal body, about 25 small residential houses and a 15-year-old private school. We have informed AAI. Based on their feedback, we will move to relocate them to other places,” said Lal.

    The town commissioner said the colour codes would be publicised through various media soon. “Thereafter, any construction which is found to be violating the colour-coded norms will be razed by the administration, besides initiating legal and punitive action,” he said.

  • 18 districts in Jharkhand clock new cases in single digits

    Eighteen of the 24 districts reported fresh cases in single digits in the last 24 hours as the number of new cases of Covid continue to fall amid an increasing recovery rate. The total number of fresh cases stands at 237 against 316 recoveries.
    Meanwhile, casualties too have dipped as the state clocked three deaths, one each from Deoghar, Hazaribag and West Singhbhum, taking the toll in Jharkhand to 958. The casualty in the state stands at 0.88%.
    While Chatra reported zero new cases, Ranchi and East Singhbhum districts reported 92 and 38 cases, respectively.
    As per government data, as many as 1,08,158 people have been infected by the new virus till date and 1,04,533 have recovered from the infection, taking the recovery rate up to 97.11%. The seven-day growth rate of the virus in Jharkhand was 0.16% against the national average of 0.42%.

  • Finance Minister Rameshwar Oraon tests positive for Covid

    Finance Minister Rameshwar Oraon was among the 252 people found to be Covid positive in Jharkhand on Tuesday. Oraon, the sixth minister in the Hemant Soren cabinet to get infected by the lethal virus, was admitted to Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Ranchi as a precautionary measure, leaders from the Congress party said.

    Oraon had met several bureaucrats, party workers and even chief minister Hemant Soren recently, putting all of them under Covid scanner. Besides, he was actively involved in the preparations for the twin assembly bypolls in Bermo and Dumka.

    Until Tuesday, at least five ministers in the Jharkhand Cabinet had tested positive for Covid-19. One of them, Minority Welfare Minister Haji Hussain Ansari died of a cardiac arrest. Health Minister Banna Gupta, Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Mithilesh Thakur and Agriculture Minister Badal Patralekh also tested positive for Covid-19 earlier and recovered without complaining of any symptoms. However, Covid-infected Education Minister Jagarnath Mahto had to undergo a lung transplant surgery in Chennai.

    Meanwhile, five more people died of Covid-19 infection in Jharkhand on Tuesday, taking the toll up at 910, a bulletin released by the National Health Mission (NHM) stated. The casualties occurred in Ranchi, East Singhbhum, Deoghar, Bokaro, Chatra and Giridih. Each of these districts reported one death each. The Covid-19 recovery rate, however, improved on the day as at least 456 patients overcame the virus in 24 hours, government data stated. The total number of Covid recoveries in the state inched towards 1 lakh on the day. As per government data, of the 1,04,940 people infected by the virus so far, 99988 have recovered, taking the recovery rate up at 95.28 per cent.

  • Lalu won’t get bail before poll results as HC defers hearing

    RJD president Lalu Prasad will not be released from jail before the formation of the new government in Bihar as the Jharkhand HC on Friday deferred to November 27 the hearing on his plea for suspension of his sentence in a fodder scam case related to fraudulent withdrawal worth Rs 3.13 crore from the Dumka treasury. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh postponed the matter to November 27 after the CBI sought more time to file a written reply in the matter.
    Bihar poll results will be out on November 10. Lalu’s younger son Tejashwi Yadav had said a number of times during the poll campaign that his father would attend his birthday celebrations on November 9 and also “witness the formation of the RJD government on November 10”.
    Last month, the HC granted bail to Lalu in a fodder scam case related to the Chaibasa treasury, observing that he has served half of the five-year sentence awarded to him. He had earlier been granted relief in Ranchi and Deoghar cases as well. The Dumka case is the only one in which he has not been granted bail yet. Lalu’s counsel Prabhat Kumar accused the CBI of being “politically motivated” and delaying the hearing in the case deliberately.

  • Baba Dham temple opens for devotees from other States

    A large number of devotees turned up at Baba Baidyanath dham temple, Deoghar in the beginning of this week to pay obeisance and do Jalabhishek as the doors of the famous temple were opened for devotees from all over the country.

    Earlier, the temple doors were opened for devotees of only Jharkhand, but, the district administration lifted restrictions for devotees of other states too. 

    Moreover, the district administration also lifted the restrictions on the number of devotees entering the ancient abode of Lord Shiva. Earlier, there were restrictions on entry of only 1000 devotees, but from Monday onwards around 1500 devotees in a day can make entry through e- pass.

    Deoghar, DC Kamleshwar Prasad Singh said, “The doors of Baba Baidyanath dham temple Deoghar were opened for devotees from other states too. Entry of devotees will be made maintaining the social distance norms.”

    However, as per Deoghar district administration directives entry of children, sick and elderly people above the age of 65 years will be restricted.

    Earlier, as per Supreme Court directives, the Deoghar district administration on last Monday of Shravan month (August 3), opened the doors of Baba Baidyanath dham for devotees. Later, on August 27 the temple’s doors were opened for devotees.

    The district administration has made elaborate arrangements for entry of devotees. Pilgrims will have to collect their e- passes for entry. The e-passes will be issued to ensure safety amid the coronavirus pandemic. Also, only 125 devotees can offer prayers per hour adhering to the protocols of safety and social distancing. For devotees entering from other states, they have to follow all the Covid 19 guidelines. Devotees not following Covid guidelines will

    have to undergo 14 days quarantine.

    Devotees have been asked to wear masks, keep sanitizers and follow social distancing norms. 

    Nestled in Deoghar in the Santhal Pargana, Baba Baidyanath dham is one of 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple complex has one main temple of Baba Baidyanath, along with 21 other temples. The Jyotirlinga is in the main temple.
