  • Third Eye: When the minister means business, Not letting go of the opportunity and making a switch in time

When the minister means businessThe newly reconstituted monitoring group, chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chauhan and including Jitendra Singh, aspires to be active. Chauhan, who is now in charge of the Jharkhand polls, was late for the opening meeting due to a flight delay from Ranchi. However, he made it plain that he intends to hold two sessions per month and will keep them focused. Unlike the first meeting last week, which was attended by approximately 80 Union Secretaries, the following meetings will only include officials from departments pertinent to the topic under discussion. Not letting go of the opportunityThe first MidCareer Training Program for civil servants of BIMSTEC countries , conducted this month by India’s National Center for Good Governance, has attracted 45 mid and seniorlevel civil servant officials from the participating countries. However, officials from Bangladesh are conspicuously absent due to ongoing violence in the country. Nepal is claimed to have jumped at the opportunity to fill the additional spots that had become available. Making a switch in timeEknath Shinde made a slip of the tongue when addressing aPC on the government’s achievements, saying that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government had accomplished a lot. Fadnavis, who was sitting close, corrected him and pointed out that it was the Mahayuti government. Instead of apologizing, Shinde conveniently stated he used the MVA to compare its poor performance to that of the Mahayuti government.

The party has now mandated such show cause notice will remain an internal matter and there will be no press statement.

  • Third Eye: From new Parliament entry issues to seed papers at Amrit Udyan

No Pass, No EntryFormer parliamentarians are not allowed to enter the new Parliament using their Icard. A pass, issued at the reception, is a must to enter the building and this has irked several former MPs from BJP and other parties. In the previous Parliament, now rechristened as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’, former parliamentarians never needed a pass to gain entry, their Icard was more than enough.Messaging via MovieMaharashtra’s politicians have now taken to moviemaking to hit out at their opponents. After a sequel on the late Anand Dighe, CM Eknath Shinde’s mentor, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT) has declared that he will make a new movie and name it “Namak Haram Part II”. Incidentally, Sena (UBT) has labeled Shinde and his faction ‘namak haram’ (backstabber) and traitors. Seed Papers at Amrit UdyanAstone abacus, sound pipe and music wall are among the key attractions in the famed Amrit Udyan inside Rashtrapati Bhavan, which will open for public viewing from Friday. • Triple Trouble: BJP Faces Seat Sharing Hurdle For Maharashtra Assembly Polls After Lok Sabha Debacle.

Maharashtra is one of the four poll-bound states going to the elections in the coming month. After facing a debacle in the Lok Sabha polls, the ruling Mahayuti (NDA) consisting of BJP, Shiv Sena-Shinde and NCP-Ajit Pawar is facing a tough challenge to retain power in the Maharashtra assembly elections. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Mahayti bagged only 17 seats out of the total 48 while the opposition party bagged 30 seats.

The Maharashtra assembly has 288 members and the majority mark is 145. In the current assembly, the Mahayuti has 201 MLAs while the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) – have 67 MLAs.

Now, the three parties – BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP – are looking to strike a seat-sharing deal for the upcoming assembly polls. However, the battle for constituencies has intensified as parties gear up for the upcoming elections. Reports indicate that the BJP aims to contest at least 150 seats, leaving 138 seats for the two allies.

However, the Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, is targeting a minimum of 100 seats. Therefore, the NCP could get only 38 seats but the Ajit Pawar-led faction is not willing to settle for less than 80 seats.

Securing these numbers is crucial, particularly as the coalition is still reeling from its disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. In that contest, the coalition won only 17 of the state’s 48 seats, falling short against the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which secured 30 seats.

Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde are meeting the top BJP leadership including Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the seat-sharing issue and resolve the difference. Finalizing the seats is also important thus to have an early advantage over the MVA which has been in the campaign mode after the Lok Sabha poll boost.

  • Third eye: Smoking out the plot, difficult to fathom, and bamboo business

Smoking out the plotThe management of an educational institution in Maharashtra’s Saswad was stunned when it invited former Shiv Sena MLA and exminister Vijay Shivtare to address students. He began by saying that in his childhood he wanted to be like Dhirubhai Ambani but was “very mischievous” and used to “steal money to smoke beedis till he collapsed” and all that was when he was in the “fourth standard”. Shivtare’s speech has raised a lot of eyebrows and it joins a long list of gaffes by Shiv Sena leaders. Difficult to fathomOpposition leader R Ashoka has claimed that CM Siddaramaiah engineered the defeat of Congress candidate DK Suresh in Bengaluru Rural to cut his brother and deputy CM DK Shivakumar to size. But the claim has not gone down well within sections of BJP leaders because CN Manjunath won by an impressive margin of 2.69 lakh votes riding what they believe is a Modi wave. So, now they are scratching their heads, unable to understand Ashoka’s analysis.Bamboo businessDuring a recent event, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde spoke about the importance of planting trees and said that some are planting bamboo, which too is good for the environment as it gives a a lot of oxygen. Then, with a wink, he said that some people should also be given this bamboo (stick treatment). Shinde did not name anyone, but he indicated that he was referring to Sanjay Raut, member of Parliament representing the Uddhav Thackerayled party.

He also said that the grand old party has lost the path of constructive politics.

Milind Deora also said that a strong government is needed at the Center and States in India. “It is a matter of pride for all of us that under the leadership of PM Modi, India is stronger today…I would like to add that in the last 10 years not one terror attack has happened in Mumbai. This is a major achievement for Mumbaikars,” said Deora.

He further said, “The same party that used to offer constructive suggestions to this country, on how to take the country forward, has now just one goal – speak against whatever PM Modi says and does. Tomorrow, if he says that Congress is a very good party, they will oppose it. I believe in the politics of GAIN – Growth, Aspiration, Inclusivity and Nationalism. I don’t believe in the politics of PAIN – Personal Attacks, Injustice and Negativity.”

#WATCH | After joining Shiv Sena, Milind Deora says, “I have been receiving a lot of phone calls since morning that why did I sever 55-year-old ties of my family with Congress party…I was loyal to the party during its most challenging decade. Deora further said that the same party that once ushered in economic reforms is today abusing industrialists, and businessmen and calling businessmen ‘anti-nationals’.

Deora said that he has received many calls over his decision. “I was loyal to the party during its most challenging decade. Unfortunately, today’s Congress is very different from the Congress of 1968 as well as that of 2004. Had Congress and UBT given importance to constructive & positive suggestions and merit & capability, Eknath Shinde and I wouldn’t have been here. Eknath Shinde had to make a major decision, I had to make a major decision,” he said.

Deora reportedly quit Congress after the grand old party agreed to leave the Mumbai South seat for Sena-UBT. Sena-UBT won the seat in 2019 when it was in alliance with the BJP. Now, it’s likely that Deora may contest the seat on the Shinde-Sena ticket.
