    Political leaders including AJSU supremo Sudesh Mahato, Giridih MP Chandraprakash Chaudhary and locals of Dhanbad on Thursday paid tributes to former Tundi MLA Raj Kishore Mahato, who passed away at the age of 75 on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at the Asian Durgadas Jalan Memorial Hospital.     The politician joined active politics following the death of his father Binod Bihari Mahato, who was the founder of JMM, and contested the parliamentary election in 1991 to win a seat at Giridih. He later won the assembly election from Sindri on a BJP ticket in 2009.

    Following his win at Sindri, Mahato contested the assembly elections from Tundi in 2014 on an AJSU ticket to win it. However, he could not prove himself during the last polls, and lost the Tundi seat to JMM’s Mathura Prasad Mahato.

    Raj Kishore graduated in Mining Engineering from Indian School of Mines (now IIT (ISM)) in 1968, and later went on to earn his LLB degree from Chotanagpur Law College in 1975.

    The former Tundi MLA also served as the chairman of the state Legal Commission after his loss in the last assembly polls, to concentrate on educational and social work under the banner of Binod Bihari Mahato Smarak Samiti.

  • Finance Minister Rameshwar Oraon tests positive for Covid

Health Minister Banna Gupta, Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Mithilesh Thakur and Agriculture Minister Badal Patralekh also tested positive for Covid-19 earlier and recovered without complaining of any symptoms. However, Covid-infected Education Minister Jagarnath Mahto had to undergo a lung transplant surgery in Chennai.

    Meanwhile, five more people died of Covid-19 infection in Jharkhand on Tuesday, taking the toll up at 910, a bulletin released by the National Health Mission (NHM) stated. The casualties occurred in Ranchi, East Singhbhum, Deoghar, Bokaro, Chatra and Giridih. Each of these districts reported one death each. The Covid-19 recovery rate, however, improved on the day as at least 456 patients overcame the virus in 24 hours, government data stated. The total number of Covid recoveries in the state inched towards 1 lakh on the day. As per government data, of the 1,04,940 people infected by the virus so far, 99988 have recovered, taking the recovery rate up at 95.28 per cent.

  • 10 CRPF jawans injured as truck overturns in Jharkhand

    Ten CRPF personnel were injured, some of them critically, when a truck carrying them overturned after losing control while trying to save some bovine animals in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Friday, police said.

    The incident took place in Madhuban police station area when around 25 jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force’s 154th Battalion were being transported from Madhuban to Nimiaghat, a police officer said.

    Some cattle suddenly came in front of the CRPF truck and the driver tried to manoeuvre to save them, following which the vehicle overturned, the officer said.

    The injured jawans have been admitted to a local hospital and it is being discussed whether to airlift the two-three personnel who are in critical condition, he added.
