  • ‘Piece of cake at U-19 level is like mud at the senior level’: Sunil Gavaskar offers ‘boys against men’ analogy as India lose T20 collection vs West Indies

After India’s embarrassing loss to West Indies within the fifth and remaining T20, which noticed them lose the collection 2-3, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar had fairly an unforgiving verdict.

India received the Test collection 1-0 and nearly managed to win the ODI collection 2-1. The T20I collection nevertheless was a real wake-up name. India misplaced the primary two video games, earlier than bouncing again to attract degree however within the fifth sport, they suffered an embarrassing eight-wicket loss.

Many rookie stars, together with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Mukesh Kumar have been introduced into the crew. While a couple of of them clicked on a person degree, they didn’t shine as a crew.

The duo of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan – that additionally opened within the ODI collection – opened for the facet within the first two T20Is. However, they might solely add 5 and 16 within the two matches respectively. Ishan was then rested for teen Jaiswal, however barring the fourth T20I the place the duo cast an excellent 165-run stand, it was a disappointment for the facet.

Gavaskar mentioned it’s difficult to transition from dominating on the franchise degree to donning the nationwide colours. He famous that the swap from U19 to the senior crew can be troublesome, utilizing the ‘boys vs men’ analogy.

“A player could do well at the franchise level, but when it comes to playing for the country, it’s a different ball game of pressures and expectations. It is one step up, which can be too steep for even some of the best performers at the franchise level. How often have we seen this when the Under-19 performers just aren’t able to take that one step up from a boys’ tournament to a men’s competition?” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

“Yes, the kids look great playing against kids, but when they come up against the men, they suddenly find that what looks like a piece of cake at the under-19 level is more like mud at the senior level. That’s why so many who looked good at the boys’ level have been found wanting at the senior level. It’s not just the temperament; even the skill set is way below the standard required at the franchise level. Then, having been bought for crores, some of these youngsters lose the fire in the belly and are happy to cruise along in later years and get their contracts extended, even if it is for a lesser amount.”

Gavaskar nevertheless mentioned that the defeat shouldn’t be a dampener..

“The loss to West Indies should not be a dampener. Don’t forget that they have won the ICC T20 World Cup twice, and their players are matchwinners for the different franchises they play for in the IPL. So, they are a top-class T20 team, and there’s no shame in losing to them. It should be a wake-up call, though, to see the areas where India needs to improve to strengthen its side. Some of those who were rested for this series may not be around for too long, so their replacements need to be found pretty quickly too, as the next ICC T20 World Cup is just a year away,” he defined.

All these games are the games where we have to learn. We have spoken as a group that whenever we can take the hard way we will. In hindsight, one series here or there doesn’t matter but the commitment to the goal is important.”

When requested of the T20 World Cup subsequent yr within the Caribbean and USA, Pandya added, “It’s a long way. We have the ODI World Cup coming up. You get to learn a lot. And special mention for all the boys. They showed great character. Winning and losing is a part of the process and we are going to make sure we learn from that.”

While the West Indies had launched spin into assault from the get go as Akeal Hosein bowled three overs on a trot within the powerplay, India would solely introduce Kuldeep Yadav after the fourth over with 44 runs already on the scoreboard. Axar Patel was launched as late because the fifteenth over.

On a pitch the place stroke-making wasn’t a straightforward proposition, Surya needed to curb his aptitude a bit however nonetheless had sufficient firepower in his arsenal to hit 4 fours and three sixes throughout his knock.

In reply, India’s nemesis Nicholas Pooran (47 not out off 35 balls) regarded far more fluent however was overshadowed by opener King as they added 107 runs for the second wicket to place West Indies heading in the right direction regardless of three climate associated interruptions.

On identical observe the place the Caribbean bowlers put the Indian batters beneath tight leash, the bowling assault regarded horribly out of depth barring Kuldeep Yadav (0/18), who delivered yet one more regular efficiency.

Tilak’s dismissal did turn into the turning level so far as India’s downfall was involved.

This was Surya’s fifteenth T20I fifty however it was on the scratchier facet regardless of some wonderful strokes together with the six off Joseph over long-off to finish his milestone.

But it didn’t assist as Sanju Samson (13 off 9 deliveries) performed a nothing shot with none footwork off Romario Shepherd (4/31 in 4 overs) to place extra stress on Surya.

Skipper Hardik Pandya (14 off 18 balls) couldn’t get off the blocks and wasted too many balls earlier than lastly connecting one after which perishing off the very subsequent ball as Shepherd used the slower ones to good impact.

Pandya’s issues did have its impact as Surya couldn’t present the ultimate flourish. Axar Patel (13) and Mukesh Kumar, who hit a last ball boundary, pushed India in direction of a par-score however that wasn’t sufficient ultimately.

West Indies have been greater than prepared to assist him alongside. Nicolas Pooran tried to smash Yadav’s first ball, a googly, for a six however went to the on facet and couldn’t clear long-on. A couple of balls later, Yadav squeezed out a slider and had Darren Powell trying to find the ball outdoors off. If India had one main concern on the prime of the order from this collection, it was Shubman Gill’s kind. The method Yashasvi Jaiswal began helped him ease into his knock right here and Gill slowly started to search out his contact. Some poor bowling helped. There have been fairly a couple of shortish stuff, and Gill pulled them aside. Obed McCoy began it, Odeon Smith adopted it, and instantly, Gill was up and working. It was a again of size from McCoy within the 4th over that began it off and Gill unfurled his pull shot for a six; it wasn’t his signature short-arm because the observe by way of was greater than regular, ending up behind his head. By the tip, the large hits have been flowing with out a lot fuss; he crash-landed Romario Shepherd’s slower on within the sixteenth over effectively over long-on, earlier than he fell in the identical over, helicoptering an aerial flick to deep midwicket, with India 14 runs adrift of the goal.

Jaiswal was the extra expansive of the 2; again and again he would clear his entrance leg and provides it a good-old smash. Like Gill, his first few boundaries have been off shortish balls. Once they corrected their size, Jaiswal began to do his factor: shifting across the crease to wallop by way of the road or heave it throughout or lap it over. There was one reverse swept six of the left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein

West Indies would rue Pooran and Powell’s wickets however have been shored up by Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer. Hope regarded fairly comfy in opposition to spin, and had the boldness to repeatedly go inside-out with the flip to the off facet. He crashed Chahal and Axar by way of covers and the one time he tried to go throughout to the leg facet for a giant hit, he fell, holing out to long-on. Hetmyer began slowly, however discovered his wings ultimately overs. There was one deft late steer of Hardik Pandya’s slower one all the way down to extensive third man boundary; other than that it was the everyday Hetmyer slugs that dominated the day. But it was at all times clear that West Indies didn’t have the rating to check India, particularly on this observe, particularly after Gill additionally joined within the run-fest led by Jaiswal.
