  • Jharkhand assembly polls: ExBJP MLAs Louis Marandi, Kunal Sarangi join JMM ahead of Jharkhand assembly polls

Two more former BJP legislators Louis Marandi and Kunal Sarangi on Monday joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), weeks ahead of the assembly polls in the state. The development also comes barely two days after threeterm BJP legislator Kedar Hazra and AJSU Party’s Umakant Rajak joined the JMM.

“We joined the JMM today,” Sarangi, the BJP’s former spokesperson and exBahragora MLA, told PTI.

Marandi, a former BJP legislator, had in 2014 defeated Chief Minister Hemant Soren by a margin of 5,262 votes from Dumka. In 2019, Soren won from the seat by a margin of 13,188 votes. He, however, vacated the seat and retained the Barhait constituency.

His brother Basant Soren had defeated Marandi by over 6,842 votes in party stronghold Dumka in the bypoll.

Sarangi had in July resigned from the party’s primary membership, around a monthandahalf after stepping down from the post of Jharkhand unit spokesperson. He sent his resignation to BJP Jharkhand unit president Babulal Marandi, citing various organizational and peopleoriented issues in East Singhbhum district.

Sarangi had also expressed disappointment with the party leadership’s “indifferent approach” despite his efforts to highlight crucial issues.

  • JMM’s Kalpana Soren leads INDIA Bloc’s women campaign in J’khand

New Delhi: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress have found a new star campaigner in Kalpana Soren, chief minister Hemant Soren’s wife, and the alliance is using her especially to connect with women voters ahead of the assembly election.

The BJP has introduced a battery of leaders in the state, right from PM Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. During the Parivartan Yatra, Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma and MP CM Mohan Yadav also held public meetings in the state. In comparison, the INDIA bloc is relying on Hemant Soren and a team of women leaders led by Kalpana Soren.

On September 23, Kalpana started the ‘Maiya Samman Yatra’ with state ministers Bebi Devi and Dipika Pandey Singh accompanying her, making it an allwoman team. They have so far covered Palamu and Kolhan divisions of the state and plan to campaign in the remaining three divisions as well. It’s been over a week and the trio has done more than 50 public meetings, Jan Samvad and Ratri Choupal programs.”During the day we participate in public meetings and interact with women trying to know the problems they face in getting the benefit of government schemes. There are 50 lakh beneficiaries of Maiya Samman scheme, and we plan to connect with all of them,” Dipika Pandey Singh told ET.

“I am representing the Congress in the yatra.” The three leaders have interacted with college going girls, students of Kasturba Gandhi School and women selfhelp groups, among others.

  • Kalpana Soren: Jharkhand govt set for cabinet expansion; Kalpana Soren likely to be one of the inductees

Five months ahead of assembly polls, the Champai Sorenled coalition government in Jharkhand may witness a Cabinet expansion in July. Jailed former CM Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren could be one of the inductees.

There are two vacancies in the Champai Soren’s Cabinet and both may be filled to send a political message before assembly polls. Kalpana had won Gandey assembly byelection in May. In the runup to parliamentary elections, she emerged as the party’s star campaigner in the absence of Hemant, who has been lodged in jail since January in connection with a money laundering case linked with an alleged land grab.

According to JMM sources, Kalpana may be inducted in the Cabinet to portray her as the party’s main face in the forthcoming polls. Sources close to her, however, denied this speculation, saying she won’t want to enter the government for less than six months. JMM may not want to risk replacing Champai with Kalpana in the CM’s chair as this could trigger an internal rebellion. In Jharkhand, there are 12 Cabinet ministers along with the CM. At present there are 10 ministers (seven from JMM, one from RJD and three from Congress). One vacancy (opened up due to a JMM minister’s death) is from JMM quota and another has been created with the resignation of Congress’ Alamgir Alam after his arrest in a money laundering case. According to sources, Congress’ Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari may be inducted into the Cabinet. Kalpana may fill the other vacancy. A source told ET: “The vacancy is for a candidate from the Scheduled Castes. It may also be a risk to fill it with a tribal. But it can be justified because Kalpana Soren is a tribal woman.”

The JMMled alliance has 47 MLAs JMM’s 29, Congress’s 17 and RJD’s one. Sixty sevenyearold Champai was sworn in as the 12th CM of the state on February 2.

  • PM Modi targets JMM JMM means eat hard: Modi

Dhanbad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday fiercely attacked the JMM government of the state in Jharkhand and said that JMM means eat hard. He also attacked former jailed state Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The Prime Minister is on a two-day tour of Eastern India, under which after Jharkhand and West Bengal, he is scheduled to visit Bihar on Saturday, where he will address two rallies. This will be his first visit after the formation of the government again in the state. PM Modi targets JMM

However, on Friday, Prime Minister Modi reached Dhanbad and addressed a public meeting in Barwada. He targeted JMM and Congress, both parties of the ruling coalition in the state. Modi said- JMM means-eat a lot. Earlier, heaps of coal were found in Jharkhand, now they are found in notes. • Hemant Soren resigns as Jharkhand CM; senior leader Champai Soren’s name proposed as new CM

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has submitted his resignation to the governor on Wednesday amid ongoing investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into an alleged “huge racket of illegal change of land ownership by the mafia” in the state. Following Hemant Soren’s resignation, Champai Soren is speculated to be the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand according to ANI. Champai Soren serves as a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. Affiliated with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, he represents the Seraikella constituency in Jharkhand. As per JMM MP Mahua Maji, “The CM is in ED custody. The CM has gone to the Governor with the ED team to submit his resignation… Champai Soren will be the new Chief Minister… We have enough numbers…” Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur said, “CM Hemant Soren has decided to resign. Champai Soren has been chosen as the new leader of the Legislative party… All the MLAs are with us”. The conspiracy by the Modi government that was going on since 2019 to destabilize an elected government, they have insulted the mandate of 3.5 crore people. Without any fault, a popular CM (Hemant Soren) has been arrested. We will give a befitting reply,” says Jharkhand minister Mithilesh Kumar Thakur to ANI. Hemant Soren’s Legal ChallengesThe current Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, has been grappling with legal issues, including the filing of an FIR against ED officials and ongoing questioning in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. The uncertainty surrounding his political future has led to discussions about who might assume the leadership mantle.

An ED team visited Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence in Delhi on Monday to question him regarding an ongoing case. Despite the chief minister’s absence, the ED team spent nearly 13 hours conducting searches, leading to the discovery of Rs 36 lakh in cash and incriminating documents. Additionally, a luxury SUV was seized from Soren’s residence during the operation. Security was also tightened and Section 144 imposed around the now former CM’s residence.

  • ED continues to quiz Soren in money laundering case, Section 144 clamped near CM’s residence

Enforcement Directorate sleuths continued to question Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren at his official residence here on Saturday in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. The entire area has turned into a virtual fortress with heavy deployment of security forces, an official said.

Soren, 48, who is also the executive president of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), had earlier skipped seven summonses by the ED. He finally gave his consent after the probe agency summoned him for the eighth time.

The ED personnel reached Soren’s residence around 1 pm, the official said, adding, the questioning has been underway for more than six hours now. Security personnel, deployed in large numbers at the spot, are using highresolution body cameras to keep track of activities around the house, he said.

The measure comes in the wake of the recent attack on ED officials in West Bengal during a raid pertaining to an alleged multicrore ration distribution scam.

The Ranchi district administration has also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC near Soren’s house, disallowing any demonstration, carrying weapons and public meetings. “The restrictions will be in place till 11 pm on Saturday,” Ranchi SDO Utkarsh Kumar told PTI. Security has also been bolstered outside the residences of key BJP leaders in the state and the party headquarters as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the JMM convened a meeting of its legislators at the chief minister’s residence.

“The ED is questioning the CM… We are also holding our meeting… Any strategy about the future course of action will be made based on the outcome of the questioning,” JMM general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya told PTI.

Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari, who met Soren before being quizzed by the ED officials, said the chief minister asked party workers to be patient.

“The CM, after seeing me, turned emotional and asked us to have patience,” Ansari said.

Opposing the ED action, JMM workers and tribal outfits staged protests across the state. Asked about the demonstrations, Bhattacharya said those were spontaneous, and his party had not taken any call on that.

JMM workers armed with bows and arrows were also spotted at some distance from Soren’s house.

Congress’ Jharkhand president Rajesh Thakur said that party MLAs were present to express solidarity with the CM.

Those present inside Soren’s residence include Social Welfare Minister Joba Manjhi, Congress legislator Deepika Pandey Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji, besides several JMM legislators.

Jharkhand Advocate General Rajiv Ranjan, DGP Ajay Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Ranchi, Rahul Kumar Sinha and SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha are also at the spot, officials said.

The investigation pertains to a “huge racket of illegal change of ownership of land by the mafia” in Jharkhand, according to the central probe agency.

It has so far arrested 14 people in the case, including 2011batch IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, who served as the director of the state’s Social Welfare Department and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.

JMM MLA Ramdas Soren claimed that this was an attempt to destabilize the Jharkhand government.

The BJP, however, alleged that the chief minister was playing the “victim card” by sponsoring protests across the state.

“The CM should not have been given the privilege of interrogation at his official residence. Soren is scared of being arrested and that is why he did not visit the ED office for questioning,” senior BJP leader Amar Bauri told PTI.

Jharkhand BJP president Babulal Marandi said the ED agreed to Soren’s request for questioning at the chief minister’s house out of respect for him.

“Now, we hope that the CM will also show generosity and issue an order to the Jharkhand Police today itself that instead of calling any accused to the police station and interrogating him, officers should go to the house of the accused and question,” Marandi wrote on

He also claimed that tribals in the state are not with Soren anymore, and they want his exit.

Soren had filed a petition before the Supreme Court and the Jharkhand High Court, seeking protection from the ED action, terming the summonses “unwarranted”. Both the courts subsequently dismissed his petitions.

Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan had earlier this week said that the ED was doing its duty and Soren should provide the “right answers” to the probe agency.

In the 81member Jharkhand Assembly, the ruling coalition holds 47 seats, including 29 MLAs from the JMM, 17 from the Congress, and one each from the RJD and the Communist Party of India (MarxistsLeninist).
