In Bistupur, near the Postal Park, the number of agitators swelled after 12 noon as bandh supporters reached the area in tractors and motorcycles chanting slogans like “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” and “Kendra Sarkar Kala Kanoon Wapas Lo”.

Public transport, like town buses and auto-rickshaws, stayed off the road till 3pm. Long-distance buses for Ranchi and other destinations did not ply fearing disruptions.

District Congress president Bijay Khan, along with other party leaders, marched from Tilak Pustakalaya to Postal Park with placards and banners condemning the Centre’s farm laws.

  • Expect commuting issues till noon, but markets likely to stay open

Commuting could be an issue while shops and markets may open late on Tuesday in capital Ranchi and other parts of the state as the ruling JMM-Congress-RJD government has extended full support to the Bharat Bandh called by farmers’ outfits against the new farm laws.

On Tuesday, various political parties staged candlelight demonstrations at Ranchi’s Albert Ekka, appealing to one and all to ensure the success of the bandh.

With chief minister Hemant Soren throwing his weight behind farmers by announcing the JMM’s wholehearted support for Tuesday’s strike, the state police and district administrations are on high alert to ensure maintenance of law and order amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic.

Members of the transport and trade sectors in the state have so far disassociated themselves from the bandh, but many feared that they may be forced to close shops and establishments, given that the government is supporting the bandh.

In Jharkhand, farmers are yet to hit the streets on their own, but the Opposition, mainly Congress and Left parties, have been holding series of protests over the last week against the new farm laws.

  • Left parties back farmers, plan road blockade in Jharkhand

Left parties and social groups linked to them have announced statewide road blockades on December 10 in solidarity with protesting farmers, who are camping on the borders of Delhi in support of their demand to repeal the new farm laws enacted by the Narendra Modi government.

As a prelude to the December 10 blockade, Left parties will also hold candlelight processions across district and block levels. Days earlier, on December 5, they will hold block-level demonstrations.

A decision to this effect was taken at a joint meeting, held between representatives of CPI, CPM, CPI (M-L), Marxists Coordination Committee (MCC) on Wednesday, CPM state secretary Prakash Viplav said in a statement on Thursday.

He claimed members of the ruling coalition, namely, JMM, Congress and RJD, would also support the protests.

“In solidarity with lakhs of protesting farmers, we have also decided to hold chakka-jam on December 10. However, throughout this week, different groups will be staging demonstrations and marches across the state in the run-up to the statewide chakka-jam,” he said.

  • JMM to meet LS Speaker on Sarna code

Members of the ruling UPA alliance in Jharkhand have decided to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla over the inclusion of Sarna Adivasi religion code in 2021 Census.

“A delegation of senior JMM leaders, including our MP (Rajmahal MP Vijay Hansdak) and several MLAs will be seeking an appointment with Lok Sabha Speaker (Om Birla) and place before him the necessity of including Sarna/Adivasi religion code in the 2021 Census for safeguarding the identity of tribals across the country and Jharkhand. We are waiting for the announcement of the next Lok Sabha session and would meet the Speaker soon after the commencement of the session,” JMM general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharjee said.

The JMM leader also called upon the BJP MPs, who comprise a majority in Jharkhand, to come forward and join hands with the JMM on this issue. “The NDA has 12 MPs and they should also join hands with us in requesting for the inclusion of the Sarna/Adivasi religion code in the Census 2021 if they are serious about this issue,” Bhattacharjee said.
