    — Zee News (@ZeeNews) November 2, 2024 Tensions in Karnataka’s Kadakol Village Over Waqf Property Claims

In Karnataka’s Kadakol village, Haveri district, a rumor spread that local temples and Hindu properties had been identified as Waqf properties. Villagers feared that their temples and lands could soon be handed over to the Waqf Board, sparking anxiety and communal tensions.

Concerned about the potential for the Waqf Board to take over their properties, the Hindu community expressed anger, and unrest spread in the village.

    Hindu Protests Turn Violent

Videos that went viral on social media depicted angry villagers allegedly vandalizing Muslim homes in protest. Reports indicate that clashes broke out between Hindu and Muslim residents in Kadakol after Hindus received word that the Waqf Board might soon take over their temples and homes.

The conflict reportedly began when some Muslims from the village filed a petition requesting that the Hanuman Temple and Durga Temple premises be designated as Waqf property.

The petition also sought the inclusion of lands surrounding these temples under Waqf Board jurisdiction. Following this petition, the Zilla Panchayat allegedly began marking two temples and some Hindu-owned homes as Waqf properties.

As soon as news of this identification reached Hindu villagers, they were alarmed at the thought of losing their homes and temples. In response, some villagers resorted to stone-pelting targeting Muslim residences, leading to heightened security measures and the arrest of around 32 individuals, predominantly Hindus.

Official Verification and Claims by the Waqf Board

The district administration confirmed that the Waqf Board had indeed submitted a list of properties to the Zilla Panchayat, claiming ownership. Under the direction of the Zilla Panchayat CEO, the properties on the Waqf Board’s list were undergoing verification. Representatives from the Waqf Board and Zilla Panchayat visited the village to identify and verify these properties, leading to widespread unease.

    RTI Revelations

The concerns in Kadakol reflect a larger issue emerging across Karnataka. An RTI query recently revealed that the Waqf Board has been asserting ownership over multiple historic sites in the state, further fueling concerns over its expanding claims.

According to the RTI, the Waqf Board has staked claims on 53 ASI-protected historical monuments in Karnataka. These sites include significant landmarks like the Gulbarga Fort, Gol Gumbaz, Bijapur’s Bara Kaman, and Bidar Fort. Notably, the Waqf Board had claimed ownership of 43 out of these 53 monuments as early as 2005.

The RTI findings indicate that the Waqf Board laid claim to these monuments without prior discussion with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Although the ASI declared the Waqf Board’s claims as invalid, the Board remains adamant, unwilling to relinquish its stake in these properties.

Amid rising incidents like those in Kadakol, the Waqf Board’s expansive claims and powers have sparked public outrage, especially in Karnataka. Critics argue that the board’s growing authority is leading to property disputes, particularly under the current state administration.

The police filed the FIR in accordance with the directions of a special court in Bengaluru, which on Wednesday, ordered investigation by the Lokayukta Police into complaints against Siddaramaiah and three others. The order by Special Court Judge Santhosh Gajanana Bhat came on a complaint from a Mysurubased activist Snehamayi Krishna and requires the Lokayukta Police to complete the investigation in three months.

The police registered the case under Sections 120B, 166, 403, 406, 420, 426, 465, 468, 340, 351 and other relevant sections of the IPC, under Sections 9 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and under Sections 3, 53 and 54 of the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988 and, under sections 3 and 4 of Karnataka Land Grabbing Prohibition Act, 2011.

The complainant, however, told the media that he would pursue legally to have the case transferred to the CBI, expressing a lack of faith in the investigation by the Lokayukta Police.Demands for resignationSiddaramaiah rejected demands for his resignation saying the question does not arise since he has not committed anything wrong. He said the Opposition parties have ensnared him in a false case, for the first time, fearing the overwhelming support of people he enjoys. The BJP, however, persisted with its demands for the CM’s resignation. BJP state president BY Vijayendra and Opposition leader R Ashoka urged him to resign and save the state’s honour. • Urdu Must For Karnataka Anganwadi Teachers? BJP Accuses Siddaramaiah Govt Of ‘Muslim Appeasement’

Kannada vs Urdu Next? Amid the Kannada vs Hindi debate, CM Siddaramaiah-led Congress Government came under fire from the Opposition BJP over a notification that mandated Urdu as a must-know language for Anganwadi teachers. The notification has sparked an outrage with the BJP accusing the Congress of carrying out ‘Muslim appeasement’.

“The announcement of the Congress government of the state that to get a job as an anganwadi teacher, one should know Urdu language is condemnable. The backdoor attempt to appease the Muslim community in the recruitment of Anganwadi teachers and allow only them to get jobs is once again highlighting the insidious policy of the Congress,” said BJP leader and former MP Nalinkumar Kateel.

State Congress government’s declaration that Urdu language must be known if an Anganwadi teacher gets a job. Yes.

Anganwadi also favors the Muslim community in the recruitment of teachers, so that only they can get the job. Yet again the crooked policies of the Congress are being shown.

According to reports, since Urdu is not an official language and is primarily offered as an optional subject in Urdu-medium schools, mandating it as a requirement for Anganwadi recruitment appears unjustified. The Karnataka government under Congress, since 2017, had been planning to introduce Urdu teaching in Anganwadi centres.

  • VIP Privileges In Jail: Kannada Actor Darshan Faces FIRs Over Viral Smoking Video |

In June, the media was dominated by a sensational murder case involving Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, his alleged girlfriend, and a devoted fan. Now, Darshan is back in the spotlight, but for a very different reason. Recently, photos and videos of the actor allegedly receiving VIP treatment while in prison have gone viral, triggering a public outcry and raising questions about corruption within the prison system.

Here’s all we know about it:

    Viral Image:

One of the viral images shows Darshan, along with gangster J Nagaraj, also known as Wilson Garden Naga, and two other inmates, lounging on the prison lawn. The group can be seen smoking cigarettes and holding cups, with faint smiles on their faces. This image has stirred controversy, especially given the criminal charges against both Darshan and Naga.

    — Rekha Sharma (@sharmarekha) August 26, 2024

    Wilson Garden Naga’s Background:

Wilson Garden Naga, who has been charged under the Karnataka Control of Organized Crime Act (KCOCA) for the murder of South Bengaluru gangster Mahesh N (aka Siddapura Mahesh), was featured in the same image. Reports indicate that Darshan, along with his manager and other inmates, appeared comfortable and relaxed in the prison yard, sparking accusations of special treatment.

    VIP Treatment:

Adding to the controversy, a video surfaced of Darshan making a video call from within the prison. This video, along with the photo, has reignited the conversation about preferential treatment for high-profile inmates. Darshan is currently in custody, along with 11 others, including his rumored partner Pavithra Gowda, in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga.

    Prison Violations:

DG Prisons, Malini Krishnamurthy, also visited the prison to conduct the probe. She stated that in all three FIRs, Darshan had been made an accused and the FIRs were filed based on the report by the jail superintendent.

“One FIR has been filed on usage of mobile inside the premises of the prison. The second one has been filed on smoking of cigarette in the premises and the third one is regarding the opening of the cell. There are names of prison officers and persons in the picture in it,” she stated.

“A detailed probe is needed regarding the incident and a senior IPS officer would conduct the investigation,” she said.

The photo showing Darshan holding a cigarette and a mug of coffee was taken on the evening of August 22, according to preliminary investigations. According to DG Prisons, the CCTV cameras were not working on August 22.

    Controversy:

The incident has sparked further concerns about widespread corruption within the prison system. Seven prison staff members, including two jailers, have been suspended for their involvement in allowing Darshan’s access to luxuries like cigarettes and coffee. The prison department is now considering relocating Darshan and his associates to different prisons across the state to prevent future breaches.

    The original case:

The original case centers around the brutal murder of Renukaswamy, who was kidnapped from Chitradurga, brought to Bengaluru, tortured, and then killed. His body was later disposed of in a canal, and the incident was exposed when security personnel at a private apartment noticed dogs dragging the body. As the case progresses, Darshan’s jail privileges may only add to the mounting pressure against him.

  • Governor decision on request to prosecute Karnataka CM likely today

Bengaluru: Karnataka governor Thawarchand Gehlot is expected to respond on Monday to the council of ministers’ resolution urging him to reject activist TJ Abraham’s request for prosecution of chief minister Siddaramaiah, even as BJPJDS is pressing for the prosecution, said people familiar with the matter.

The NDA partners have accused the CM of unlawfully gaining 14 plots in an upscale Mysuru residential area, and have started a weeklong protest march to Mysuru from Bengaluru on Saturday. Congress began a sixday counter rally a day earlier, as part of a strategy to deflect the attention from the BJP protest.

Abraham also urged the governor to withdraw the showcause notice issued to Siddaramaiah asking to explain his actions. Siddaramaiah has said that the AICC leadership has thrown its weight behind him while attacking the governor as being a puppet in the hands of BJP, accusing him of trying to destabilize an elected government.

The chief minister and his party are preparing to pursue an aggressive legal battle in the event the governor concedes the activist’s request, said people familiar with the matter.

Congress has, however, not publicly spoken about its strategy in the event the Raj Bhavan grants permission for the CM’s prosecution. On Sunday, the second day of BJPJDS yatra, the opposition leaders continued to attack Siddaramaiah, while Congress rally remained mostly directed at JDS state president and Union minister HD Kumaraswamy. Congress leaders are attacking the JDS leader repeatedly as the regional party has a dominant presence in Ramanagar district, and Kumaraswamy represented Channapatna in the assembly before his election to the Lok Sabha. Kumaraswamy addressed BJP and JD (S) workers on Sunday and pledged that he would work together with BJP to dislodge the Congress regime and bring the NDA to power.

  • 7th Pay Commission: This government approves 27.5 percent salary hike for seven lakh employees | Personal Finance News

BENGALURU: The Karnataka cabinet on Monday decided to implement the recommendations of the seventh Pay Commission effective from August one, official sources said. The Chief Minister is expected to make an announcement regarding the pay hike to more than seven lakh state government employees in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, the sources said.

The 7th Pay Commission, headed by former chief secretary K Sudhakar Rao, has recommended a 27.5 percent hike on basic salary of government employees. This is expected to cost the government exchequer an additional Rs 17,440.15 crore annually. Siddaramaiah government was under pressure to decide on a pay hike, after the Karnataka State Government Employees Association announced its plans to go on an indefinite strike from August.

In March 2023, the then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai gave employees an interim 17 per cent salary hike, to which the Siddaramaiah administration is likely to add a 10.5 percentage points hike, which will total to 27.5 per cent hike on basic salary, as per the recommendation of the 7th Pay Commission, the sources said.

Besides BJP national leaders, Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s face was prominently displayed on these posters. A BJP leader pointed out that this region has a substantial population of Kirars, Chouhan’s caste.

Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivakumar has demanded an explanation from BJP for alleged distribution of liquor at an event near Bengaluru — organised to celebrate a BJP leader’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls. Looking at the pictures of people waiting patiently in long queues to collect their bottles of booze, chief minister Siddaramaiah must be secretly smiling. The event at least ‘guaranteed’ inflow of taxes to his cashstrapped regime.

Prajwal Revanna is facing a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in his household. He had reportedly left for Germany on April 27, a day after Hassan went to pollsRevanna, earlier on May 28, filed an application for anticipatory bail as he is set to return to India on Friday. Notably, his anticipatory bail plea was filed hours after the SIT arrested two prime accused in connection with the case. The arrested have been identified as Naveen Gowda and Chetan, ANI reported.

Moreover, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that action has been initiated to revoke the diplomatic passport of Revanna, adding that he has to reply to the show cause notice issued on May 23.

Congress MP DK Suresh before the arrival of the Hassan MP said, “He (Prajwal Revann) has already mentioned that he is attending SIT tomorrow. The SIT will take care of that.”

Youth Congress president Mohammed Haris Nalapad accused the BJP of helping Revanna ‘go outside’ the country.

“The program of Prajwal Revanna to go outside India is sponsored by BJP. On the day of the 26th of May after polling, he was sent immediately with a diplomatic passport outside…The BJP, Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji and our Yediyurappa ji all planned together and sent to Prajwal Revanna outside,” he said.

  • Rajya Sabha polls: Congress may sequester its MLAs in resort

The ruling Congress is said to be planning to sequester its 135 MLAs in a private resort ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled for February 27 as the party leaders are worried over reports of its MLAs and independent members being approached by the NDA leaders.

The presence of Kupendra Reddy, a wealthy businessman, as JDS candidate in the electoral fray has disturbed the peace of top Congress leaders, especially, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar.

He had, on Monday, accused JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy of making “offers” to Congress MLAs to influence them to vote for his party candidate in the February 27 polls. The Congress has even filed a complaint with the Vidhana Soudha police accusing the Opposition parties of trying to lure its MLAs with offers of bribes for voting for the JDS candidate in the RS polls.

Reddy has emerged as NDA’s surprise fifth candidate. If not for him, the four candidates would have won unopposed.

The Congress is confident of securing the full support of its 135 MLAs, and three independents to get its three candidates through. There are only four RS vacancies in Karnataka, and the BJP and Congress have fielded one and three candidates, respectively. The JDS has maintained that it has fielded Reddy not to let the NDA’s surplus votes go waste. AICC leader Ajay Maken and sitting Rajya Sabha members GC Chandrashekar and Syed Naseer Hussain are contesting from the Congress while the BJP has fielded former MLC Narayansa Bhandage. A candidate needs 45 votes to win.

  • Funds devolution rows: Siddaramaiah defends Raghuram Rajan, accuses BJP of twisting his report to defend itself

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday attacked the BJP, accusing the party of twisting former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan committee report to suit its political narrative. The saffron party had claimed that the committee had in 2013 suggested that Karnataka’s share of funds from the Center should be reduced from 4.13% to 3.73%.

The CM’s defense of the former RBI governor on social media platform “The narrative, suggesting that the committee headed by Raghuram Rajan recommended a reduction in Karnataka’s share of tax revenue is not only inaccurate but also a misinterpretation of the committee’s role,” Siddaramaiah said. The committee’s focus, he added, was on ensuring a balanced distribution of certain development funds to enhance the overall growth and progress of all states, particularly those lagging in specific development parameters.

“These recommendations were not meant to replace existing methodologies for devolution of taxes allocation,” he said. The Finance Commission, he added, operated independently of such committees. “Was the 15th Finance Commission constituted in 2019 by [Prime Minister] Narendra Modi influenced by some committee which gave a report in September 2013?”The CM hit out at the BJP’s state party president BY Vijayendra who had made the statements, accusing him of being willing to “forsake the very heart and soul of Kannadiga pride ,” all for the sake of winning approval from BJP high command. The BJP leaders’ actions, he said, revealed a “chilling indifference” to the fate of the state. “This act of betrayal, this glaring abandonment of honesty, tears at the very essence of Karnataka Pride,” he added.

With Lok Sabha polls a few months away, the Congress and its allies have been cornering the BJP on the topic of fiscal inequality towards the states, with protests in the national capital as well as social media campaigns.
