  • Baghmara and Nirsa OCs suspended

Senior Superintendent of Police, Dhanbad, Aseem Vikrant Minz, suspended Santosh Kumar Jha, officer-in-charge of Baghmara police station, on charges of laxity of work and dereliction of duty. The suspended officer has been shunted to the police line.

Notably, a host of crime incidents took place in Baghmara, particularly clashes between rival groups at the different colliery sites. The violence had a connection with the war of attrition between the Baghmara MLA Dhullu Mahto and his arch-rival ‑ former water resources minister Jaleshwar Mahto.

Talking to The Telegraph Online Dhanbad SSP, Aseem Vikrant confirmed the suspension of Baghmara’s officer-in-charge. He said, “He has been suspended on charges of laxity in work dereliction of duty and particularly concerning the violence that took place in front of attendance office block -2 office of BCCL in Bagmara yesterday.”

In a related development, Dhanbad Deputy Commission, Uma Shankar Singh, recommended disciplinary action on Nirsa Police station officer-in-charge, Subhash Singh. The recommendation has been made by the DC, based on a probe conducted by a committee led by Additional District Magistrate (law and order) Chandan Kumar on the charges of forcible closure of 18 soft coke industries of Nirsa by Singh.

Notably, a delegation of soft coke industry owners met the DC. During the meet, they accused Nirsa officer-in-charge of not only forcibly closing their respective units but also for having lodged an FIR against one of the soft coke industry owners when he tried to reopen the factory after the relaxation provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • Two workers trapped in flooded coal mine in Nirsa

Efforts are on to rescue two miners trapped inside an underground colliery after a borehole burst triggered flooding at the Mugma area of Eastern Coalfields in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Senior officials of the district administration, including Nirsa BDO Vikash Chandra Rai and circle officer M.N. Mansoori, besides police led by Nirsa SDPO Bijay Kumar Kushwaha, were supervising rescue operations.

Teams from Khudia colliery and ECL’s Mugma area and Sanctoria headquarters in Asansol are working together, trying to pump out water from the underground colliery.

The miners who are trapped are Basia Maji (56) and Manik Bauri (58).

Former Nirsa MLA Arup Chatterjee, who was at the site, said mining operations at the site were launched two days ago. “The colliery was lying closed since November 27 when there was a similar inundation. But no one was injured then,” he said.

Chatterjee said a sudden burst in the borehole led to water flowing into the mine from an adjoining colliery leading to flooding around 3.30am. And although two other workers managed to escape, Maji and Bauri got trapped inside.

“There is no record of a borehole in the mine survey record. Nor is it mentioned the mine map study carried out before the relaunch of mining activity in the colliery,” the former MLA revealed and wondered how the accident occurred.

Chatterjee said even though rescue efforts were on, he would request the district administration and Eastern Coalfields to ensure the operation was speeded up so that the two miners could be rescued as soon as possible.

Nirsa MLA Aparna Sengupta blamed the ECL management for being negligent about safety concerns. “We have been raising the issue of lack of safety gear, including boots, for the colliery workers. But the management did not respond,” she said.

  • Villagers and ECL security team clash in Nirsa, Jharkhand, woman narrowly escaped firing

The ECL clashed between the villagers and the ECL’s security team at the Kapasara Outsourcing Colliery in Mugama Area. The villagers broke the glass of the security team’s car and surrounded the car. During this, GM Singh’s bodyguard fired. There is one woman narrowly left in it.

It is said that the protesters used to do illegal mining in rural outsourcing. GM BC Singh was present in the train which was surrounded by the villagers. He has said that the charge of the villagers is not true. No one has been harmed by the firing.

It is alleged that the firing shot went out by touching the left hand of a woman. Angry people stalled the production and transport of the colliery and sat on the dharna. People are demanding the removal of GM. On the information of the incident, the teams of Nirsa, Galfarbadi, Kumardhubi police, ECL security team and CISF have reached the spot.

Outsourcing has completely turned into a police camp. Villagers said that some women had gone to choose the colliery coal in the morning. During this time GM reached and refused to choose coal. Bodyguard fired on the protest. The villagers said that they will not move away from Kapasara until GM BC Singh is transferred.

GM BC Singh says that on Monday morning he went to Kapasara for outsourcing checking. At the same time, some people surrounded them and attacked the car. A fatal attack was attempted. Air firing had to be defended. No one has been harmed in the firing. The charge made by the villagers is wrong.
