  • Lok Sabha: Rahul Gandhi takes battle against Modi to Gujarat

After challenging BJP that the opposition alliance will defeat the party in Gujarat in his maiden address in the 18th Lok Sabha early this month, Rahul Gandhi brought the political battle to the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

Visiting Ahmedabad to meet the party workers and families of the victims of Rajkot fire tragedy, Vadodara boat tragedy and Morbi bridge collapse, Gandhi used the occasion to launch a severe attack on Modi and BJP.

He harped on BJP’s defeat in Ayodhya (Faizabad constituency) in the recent Lok Sabha elections and underlined that the politics of the party was based on Ram Temple that had caught momentum with the Rath Yatra of LK Advani in 1990.

Referring to his conversation with Avdhesh Prasad, the SP member of Lok Sabha from Faizabad, Gandhi said while the people of Ayodhya did not get compensation for their land requisitioned by the government for the development of the city, the poor people of Ayodhya were not to be seen during the inauguration of the grand temple though the industrialists were visible.

    « Back to recommendation stories

He claimed that Modi wanted to contest from Ayodhya but decided against it after conducting surveys thrice and all the three surveys indicated defeat for him. Hence the prime minister contested from Varanasi and barely scraped through, Gandhi claimed. (Modi’s victory margin came down to about 1.5 lakh votes from about 4.8 lakh votes in 2019.)The opposition India bloc has defeated BJP at Ayodhya and the next step would be to defeat them in Gujarat, Gandhi said. He said BJP has challenged Congress by attacking the Congress office in Ahmedabad and the party will respond by defeating BJP in Gujarat.

Taking a jibe at the prime minister, Gandhi said if Modi had such a direct connection with God, how could he lose Ayodhya.

He further alleged that no one in the BJP leadership actually wants Modi as the leader but nobody in BJP has the courage to stand by their conviction.

“In Congress, neither our workers are scared to talk to the leadership nor the leadership is afraid to hear the workers,” Gandhi said.

  • Rahul Gandhi on Hindus: PM Modi, five ministers lead charge; seek apology from Rahul Gandhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and five senior ministers put up a spirited defence as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi came down heavily on the central government over its policies in a speech in Lok Sabha on Monday afternoon.

In what was a rare defence seen on the floor of Lok Sabha, defence minister Rajnath Singh, home minister Amit Shah, agriculture minister Shivraj Chouhan, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju and environment minister Bhupender Yadav tried to corner Gandhi over facts and parliamentary procedures and demanded his apology.

Modi rose twice to object to Gandhi’s remarks on how BJP fomented hatred and violence. Modi said: “This is a very grave matter. To call the entire Hindu community violent is a very serious matter.” Gandhi turned it around and said, “No, no, no. Narendra Modi is not the entire Hindu community. BJP is not the entire Hindu community. RSS is not the entire Hindu community.”

Modi’s second intervention – that the Constitution had taught him to “respect the post of the Leader of the Opposition, which is held today by Gandhi” – drew jeers from the Opposition benches. There were jeers because the Opposition has claimed the government is trying to subvert the Constitution, a charge BJP has trashed. Gandhi was among the MPs who added “Jai Samvidhan” to their oaths last month. “It feels nice… BJP people are repeating ‘Jai Samvidhan’ after me,” he quipped.

Even Gandhi’s stance while speaking was pointed out. Environment minister Bhupendra Yadav took out the rulebook and cited Rules 349 (12) and 352 (2) and said Gandhi was disrespecting the Speaker. Yadav said: “Leader of Opposition is addressing the House for the first time. I would like to point out two rules Rule 349 (12) and 352. First of all, LoP should know how to speak in the House. 349 (12 ) specifies the Speaker shall not sit or stand with back towards the chair. He is constantly speaking with his back towards the chair. Rule 352 (2) says ‘make personal reference by way of making an allegation imputing a motive or questioning a bonafide’ . He has not only levied an allegation against the entire government but the entire Hindu community.” Shah said, “You cannot hide such a big issue by creating ruckus in the House. LoP has said that whoever calls themselves Hindu they are violent. want to repeat his sentence those who call themselves Hindus, they talk of violence and are violent. In this country, probably he doesn’t know crores of people identify themselves as Hindus with pride. Do they all talk of violence? He should apologise for linking a particular religion to violence.”InIn another instance, Gandhi claimed that Agniveers were not getting the compensation of ₹1 crore as announced by the government. Once again Shah interjected and said: “He should put forward the facts and if these are not facts, he should apologise to Agniveers and the entire nation.” Gandhi was unfazed and said that he had put forth the truth of Agniveers on the floor of the House and the families knew the truth. “It doesn’t make a difference what I say or you say.” To this, Rijiju appealed to the Speaker to intervene: “How can he take it so lightly?”Gandhi claimed that the Agnipath scheme had been introduced without proper discussion. Rajnath Singh got up and intervened: “Please don’t mislead the House. This scheme was introduced after a lot of discussion it was discussed with 158 organisations. Such a scheme is there in the US, UK and other countries. Nobody has any problem. Making these statements without understanding is highly irresponsible. I would request you Speaker Sir to please expunge these remarks.”

Gandhi continued, “It does not matter, you like Agniveer. We don’t like Agniveer scheme. Once our government comes, we will stop it. We don’t want it.”

  • DNA: Analysis of first session of 18th Lok Sabha amid protests by opposition |

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced today, marking the beginning of a new parliamentary term with significant developments both inside and outside the house. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several other leaders, took their oaths as Members of Parliament (MPs), setting the stage for what promises to be a dynamic and contentious session. In today’s DNA, Anant Tyagi analyses the session that kicked off with opposition MPs staging demonstrations and brandishing copies of the Constitution.

The seating order inside the Parliament has changed in 2024. Today’s session gave a glimpse of how much room there is for work in this new seating arrangement and how much for conflict between the ruling party and the opposition.

On the first day of the session, opposition MPs arrived in Parliament waving copies of the Constitution. The first demonstration was by Congress MPs outside the Parliament. Almost everyone held a pocket edition of the Constitution, the same edition Rahul Gandhi carried throughout the election campaign, showing it repeatedly. The Samajwadi Party is the second largest party in the opposition. Akhilesh Yadav and his MPs carried full volumes of the Constitution. Some were English editions, and some were Hindi.

As soon as the pro-tem speaker called PM Modi to take the MP’s oath, Rahul Gandhi started showing the Constitution to the PM. When Home Minister Amit Shah reached to take the oath, Rahul Gandhi again showed the Constitution. When it was Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s turn, the opposition tried to turn the oath-taking into a commotion with slogans of ‘NEET-NEET and SHAME-SHAME.’

During the 2024 elections, the entire opposition ran with the narrative that if Modi returns to power, he will change the Constitution, end reservations, give free rein to ED and CBI, and that there won’t be any future elections in the country if Modi comes back.

Before taking his third oath, the Prime Minister paid his respects to the Constitution, leading to speculation that the opposition might change its track. But today, the opposition persisted with the Constitution narrative, prompting Prime Minister Modi to remind them of the date June 25 and Indira’s Emergency. This was the second counter we were referring to. When Modi jabbed with the reminder of the Emergency, Congress President Kharge wrote a lengthy post in response, saying that “the rope may have burnt, but the twists remain.” He ended by writing, “We will protect the Constitution.”

From the PM’s response, we can anticipate tomorrow’s scenes in Parliament. Since tomorrow is June 25, if Congress shows the Constitution again, the ruling party will likely remind them of the Emergency in full force. Watch the full DNA:

  • NDA meeting: Decadesold NDA a natural alliance: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised at the first NDA parliamentary party meeting of the 18th Lok Sabha on Friday that the grouping has lasted over three decades because it is an “organic alliance” dedicated to nationbuilding. Modi, who will lead a coalition government for the first time in his career, noted that the NDA has lasted over 30 years and is India’s most successful prepoll coalition. “NDA has the majority, but consensus is more important to run the country. We shall strive for success and leave no stone unturned. An honest review of the NDA reveals a commitment to nationbuilding rather than going after power. NDA is organic,” the prime minister said. Equal significance of all partners and working together, not for “photo ops” but at the grassroots is a primary factor that has led to NDA’s growth. “There should be an airtight bond between the regional and national aspirations for the country to grow,” he said.AllUttar PradeshMaharashtraTamil NaduWest BengalBiharKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKeralaMadhya PradeshRajasthanDelhiOther States TDP Chief NChandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister and JDU head Nitish Kumar, Maharashtra CM and Shiv Sena (Shinde) President Eknath Shinde, Chirag Paswan (LJPRV), HD Kumaraswamy (JDS), Ajit Pawar (NCP), Jitan Ram Manjhi (HAMS), Anupriya Patel (APS), and Pawan Kalyan (JSP) shared the dais with Modi and endorsed him as prime minister of the next government. The prime minister insisted that the common thread for the NDA constituents has been good governance. “NDA is synonymous with good governance. Garib Kalyan (welfare of the poor) has been at the centre for all of us for me as chief minister, Babu (Naidu) in Andhra Pradesh and Nitish Kumar in Bihar. The country has ‘lived’ this alliance. There was a big void which we have filled. We have moved with the mantra of sabka vikas,” he said. Looking ahead at “another ten years”, the prime minister assured that the NDA will strive to usher in good governance, development, quality of life for citizens and his own “dream” that the less interference there is of the government in the life of the middle and upper class the better. “All this can be achieved with the help of technology… We will write a new chapter of good.”

He took jibes at the Opposition on the EVMs controversy during the elections and charged that the INDIA parties are against technology.

“Is EVM alive or dead?” the prime minister asked the MPs, inviting laughter and thumping of desks. He alleged that the Opposition had decided beforehand that they cannot trust the EVMs and he apprehended they would take out a “death procession or a march” against it on counting day

  • DNA Exclusive: Decoding BJP’s challenges in ensuring government sustainability |

All parties of the NDA are going to meet the president on Friday to give an official letter. Modi is not BJP’s first Prime Minister who is going to become PM for the third time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee has also taken an oath as BJP’s PM three times.

In today’s DNA, Sourabh Raaj Jain analysed the challenges going to be faced by the BJP due to the alliance government. The Zee News anchor called it Modi’s ‘Atal Test.’

Atal Bihari Vajpayee did not complete his tenure in the first and second terms, but he got this good fortune in the third term. While Modi has completed the first and second terms, the third good fortune is in question. In 1999, the BJP had 182 seats, less than the majority, yet Vajpayee had completed 5 years by taking 19 parties together. Today BJP has 240 seats, but Modi does not have the experience to pull the coalition government. He has run governments with the majority of the BJP for the last two terms.

  • '370 Is Emotional Issue For Us But Political For Prime Minister: Omar Abdullah Hits Out At PM Modi |

Srinagar: Former PDP MLA Javed Baig joined the National Conference on Friday. While welcoming him, party vice president and former Chief Minister of Jammu And Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in the valley on Thursday.

Omar said that he had hoped that the PM's visit would signal the restoration of democracy in Jammu, but nothing of that sort was seen. Not a single word regarding the restoration of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir came out of the PM's rally.

Omar added, “Nothing new came from the PM's visit. There was no mention of the restoration of democracy, statehood, elections, employment, or other local issues. The PM remained silent and continued to speak the same old language of 'Parivarvaad'.”

Omar further stated, “Article 370 is an emotional issue for us, but for the Prime Minister, it is political. Why is the PM selling movie tickets? I have never been in favor of personal slogans, and such slogans have caused more harm. Voters are interested in issues related to them, not in family or other issues, and Modi has exploited this issue very well.”

National Conference's Alliance Equation For LS Polls

Regarding alliance with other parties in the Lok Sabha elections, Omar, on not accommodating PDP in seat sharing, said, “How can we give seats to a party which was in third position in the last elections? Maintaining the alliance is not only the mandate. of the National Conference but also of others.”

“We did not keep the PDP away from the alliance, but from the ground reality. How can we give the Anantnag seat to the PDP, which stood third in the last elections? PDP has been targeting NC and talking about alliance. We cannot forget that,” he added. “Doors are open for PDP in Assembly elections but there is no scope for Parliament elections,” he concluded.

Talks have been held with Congress on Lok Sabha seat sharing. “We have reached an agreement with Congress on one seat in Jammu and one seat in Ladakh. And we are also ready to leave the Anantnag seat for Congress, and if Sonia, Rahul, or Priyanka had contested the elections, we would have left that too.”

However, Omar did not speak openly on whether he would contest the elections or from which seat he would contest. He said, “I have no idea from where I will contest the elections or whether the party will field me or not.”
