  • West Bengal Politics Heat Up Over Sircar’s Letter To Mamata; BJP Says, ‘Dictatorial Attitude’

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that a letter from TMC MP Jawhar Sircar to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee exposed that “TMC means Too Much Corruption.”

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla posted a video on microblogging site

“The letter by Jawhar Sircar, TMC MP, exposes dirt, corruption and dictatorial attitude within the TMC. TMC means ‘too much corruption,” he said in a shared video.

The letter of Jawahar Sircar after statements of Sukhendu Shekhar & Shantanu Sen reflects following

    1) TMC means Too Much Corruption Every institution has been corroded with corruption by Mamta Govt

Speaking up on corruption gets you into trouble!

Reacting to the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, he writes in a post that the Mamata government’s priority was not “Nyay for Beti”.

“Mamata Govt priority in RG Kar case was not Nyay for Beti. It was an institutional cover up. There is total no confidence against her as the movement is a people’s movement yet TMC leaders abused the protesters and threatened them,” the post read.

BJP national spokesperson raised three questions in the post and also asked why Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka are still silent and they are not visiting the victim’s parent.

Meanwhile, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that this is Sircar’s personal choice and decision and he has every right to take such a step.

“We have learned that Jawhar Sircar has made his decision. He was one of the finest bureaucrats in the country and a standout from West Bengal. This is his personal choice, decision, and letter, and he has every right to take such a step. We simply want to express that we, too, agree with the essence of his letter and the questions it raises.” Ghosh told reporters in Kolkata.

  • Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar walks out, says don’t ‘politicise’ Phogat issue

New Delhi: The Opposition’s attempts to raise the issue of disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat at the Olympics in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday were turned down by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, leading to vociferous protests and a walkout. The manner of protests irked Dhankhar, who announced after the developments that he cannot chair the proceedings and left the House. He later called a meeting of the floor leaders of all parties to discuss the issue.

At the start of Zero Hour in the Upper House, some members from the Opposition benches tried to speak on the Phogat controversy but the Chairman stated emphatically that the unfortunate turn of events has pained everybody.

Opposition members shouted slogans and tried to speak on the issue. TMC floor leader Derek O’Brien raised his voice at the Chairman when members were not permitted to speak, leading Dhankhar to reprimand him. “You cannot shout at the Chair,” he said. Several Opposition leaders had given notice under Rule 267 to discuss the Phogat issue. The Opposition staged a walkout even as Dhankhar expressed his unhappiness over their conduct.

“Emergency started like this in June 1975…. They think only their heart is bleeding (over Phogat being disqualified),” Dhankhar said, adding that he will not permit the Opposition to “monetise and politicise” the issue.

He mentioned Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini’s announcement on Phogat. “Not just the state but the whole country is proud of Vinesh Phogat. She will get all the privileges and facilities of a silver medal winner (at the Olympics). The Opposition does politics on every issue. They should not do politics in the area. of sports,” Saini said on X.

  • DNA Exclusive: What Is BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar’s ‘Division Blue Print’ For West Bengal? ,

DNA Exclusive: Rumors of a potential division of West Bengal have ignited a fierce political debate in the state, following comments by Central Education Minister Sukanta Majumdar. Majumdar has proposed splitting West Bengal into two, with North Bengal being integrated into the North-East region. He argues that this move could accelerate development in North Bengal and has claimed to have discussed the idea with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In today’s episode of DNA Anant Tyagi analyzed why the BJP has suddenly raised this issue. What is the BJP’s political strategy and planning motivating this move?

Majumdar’s proposal is seen as a strategic maneuver by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has made substantial gains in North Bengal. This region, encompassing eight districts from Malda to Cooch Behar, holds eight Lok Sabha seats. The BJP’s performance in these districts has been notable: securing one seat in 2014, seven in 2019, and six in 2024. In the 2021 assembly elections, the party won 30 out of 56 seats in North Bengal, highlighting its stronghold in the region.

The idea of creating a separate Gorkhaland within North Bengal has been a long-standing demand. This historical context adds complexity to the current proposal, as any decision regarding regional integration or division would inevitably involve addressing long-standing local aspirations and grievances.

  • BJP eyes gains from polarization due to CAA

While notification of Rules of The Citizenship Amendment Act and consequent enforcement of the law has put the future of thousands of Muslim immigrants in jeopardy, it has served to polarize the electorate in equal measure. Enforcement of the law on the eve of elections after a wait of four years gives BJP another handle to rally the Hindutva votes behind it while parties like Congress, TMC, CPIM have strongly opposed it on the grounds that it will lead to persecution of Muslims.

West Bengal and Assam are expectedly witnessing the impact of CAA implementation with TMC and Congress opposing it vociferously in the respective states. TMC plans to hold a roadshow in Siliguri on Wednesday while chief minister Mamta Banerjee has declared CAA as “unconstitutional and discriminatory” and a violation of Article 14 (Right to Equality).

The Matua community, which is in favor of CAA as it will guarantee it the right to citizenship in India, firmly backs BJP and this had helped the saffron party win the Bongaon Lok Sabha seat in 2019. Sitting MP and Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, who hails from this caste, has been fielded again by the BJP.“Mamta Banerjee is provoking the people to protest against CAA and also giving it a communal angle,” Sukanta Majumdar, BJP West Bengal unit chief, told ET.

Muslim population in West Bengal is estimated to be 30% and forms a sizable chunk of the TMC votebase. BJP seeks to gain by polarizing the Hindu votes in its favor on the issue of Muslim migrants from Bangladesh.

In Assam, there is an overwhelming support to CAA due to resentment with the Mia Muslims who have settled down the state and the resultant polarization will help the BJP. There have been protests in parts of the state against this law. In Kerala, where BJP tries to woo the Christian voters along with the Hindus with limited success, CAA has given a new ray of hope. Chief Minister and CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan has said CAA will not be implemented in the state. With CAA keeping only the Muslim migrants out, BJP expects the Christians to support it while the Left parties and Congress vie for the Muslim vote. “In Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), the Christians constitute 14% of the votes while Muslims are only 9.1%. Similarly, in Pathanamthitta (where Sabarimala temple is located) and Thrissur, the Christians and Hindus outnumber Muslims. On the other hand, the Muslim vote will be divided in Kerala between CPM and Congress,” K Rajasekharan, senior BJP leader, told ET. Some Christian missionaries have reportedly backed CAA.

The reactions of BJP's political opponents against CAA makes it clear that the saffron party's aim of polarizing votes on communal lines is working though their criticism that this law is a violation of Article 14 and 15 has wide support.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that CAA notification after four years and three months and after seeking nine extensions from the Supreme Court, the BJP government has notified the rules to polarize the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam.

NC leader Omar Abdullah has said CAA is BJP's gift to Muslims on Ramadan, while PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti alleged this is an attempt to target Muslims.

  • Sandeshkhali: Local TMC leader held in Sandeshkhali land grab, sexual abuse case

One of the prime accused in the case of alleged land grab and sexual harassment of women in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district was arrested on Saturday, police said. Local TMC leader Shibaprasad Hazra, who has been named in police complaints along with party colleagues and other two prime accused Shajahan Sheikh and Uttam Sardar, was nabbed from a hideout in Sandeshkhali.

He will be produced before a local court on Sunday.

“We have arrested Shibaprasad Hazra from Sandeshkhali this evening. He will be produced before the court tomorrow,” an officer of Nazat Police Station told PTI.Earlier, police have also arrested Uttam Sardar but Shajahan Sheikh remains absconding.

With the fresh arrest, two of the three prime accused have been nabbed. A total of 18 people have been arrested in the case so far.

Meanwhile, the police added IPC sections 376D (gangrape) and 307 (attempt to murder) in the case after a survivor recorded her statement under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure before a magistrate, a source said.

  • Women of Sandeshkhali recount their horror, make allegation against TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh

Sandeshkhali (WB): Local women of the Sandeshkhali region of West Bengal on February 14 spoke on the recent violence and the Section 144 imposed in the region. She said that the leader threatened them of killing their husbands and abducting their sons, and thus asked them to keep their mouth shut in front of media. “We do not trust the government here or the local police. We want our lands and our dignity back, will they provide it to us? Women were taken from here and kept inside the homes for the whole night. They were also beaten up. Nobody could speak anything because they threatened to kill our husbands or abduct our sons. The State police will never take into custody Shahjahan, Shibu and others,” said a local.

  • ‘Submit Report On Sandeshkhali Violence’: West Bengal Governor Orders Mamata Govt |

Kolkata: Sandeshkhali, a village in West Bengal, has become the latest flashpoint of political tension as Governor CV Anand Bose has now demanded a report on Friday’s violence from the Mamata Banerjee-led government. The Raj Bhavan’s directive, coupled with calls for action against the perpetrators, underlined the simmering discontent and accusations swirling around the incident.

At the heart of the unrest lies a land dispute allegedly involving Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shivprasad Hazra. Angered by claims of forced land acquisition, villagers, including women leading marches, torched Hazra’s poultry farm. They were demanding the arrest of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, accused of orchestrating a land ration allotment scam.

The heavy police presence deployed to quell the protests proved insufficient to contain the villagers’ fury. The fiery act raised questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and fueled public outrage. “Investigations are underway to determine the cause behind the disturbances in Sandeshkhali over the past three days. All complaints received in the last two days are being thoroughly examined. It is not appropriate to make any statements at the moment, as the matter is under investigation. Adequate police forces are deployed in the area, and the situation is currently under control,” said ADG Law and Order for West Bengal, Manoj Verma.

While investigations are underway, the blame game has already begun. TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh, pointed fingers at the opposition, claiming CPI(M) and BJP instigated the violence. Two arrests have been made, and Ghosh alleged the unrest is a ploy to divert attention from Mamata Banerjee’s upcoming announcement for MGNREGA workers.

However, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari painted a different picture. He called the incident a repercussion of the state government’s actions, highlighting concerns about alleged suppression of democracy and silencing of dissent. Adhikari claimed the violence reflects the pent-up anger of the people simmering for years. “We do not support taking the law into one’s hands. What has been happening in the last 12 years there, it seems that democracy is over there. The right to vote and the right to voice one’s opinions is over. Whatever is happening is a Normal turn of events. People were angry for a long time and that has come out,” Adhikari said.

Amidst these opposing narratives, the truth remains under investigation. The Governor’s demand for a report indicates a seriousness to understand the root cause and ensure accountability. However, the political mudslinging threatens to overshadow the voices of the villagers and their grievances.

Key questions linger: Was the land acquisition legitimate? Did authorities adequately address the villagers’ concerns? Was the violence pre-meditated, or a spontaneous outburst of frustration? Only a transparent and impartial investigation can provide answers and pave the way for a peaceful resolution.

  • Mamata Banerjee to skip meeting on simultaneous polls in Delhi

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday said she would skip the meeting of the ‘one nation one election’ committee in New Delhi on Tuesday, citing engagements related to the upcoming state budget. The TMC supremo said she has communicated to the committee chief, former President Ramnath Kovind, about her inability to attend the meeting. “I have canceled my New Delhi trip… The state budget will be presented in the assembly on February 8, and there are only two days to go. In this situation, I had to call off the visit,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat. “I have already spoken to Kovind ji about this,” she said. The chief minister said TMC MPs Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Kalyan Banerjee will be present at the meeting in the national capital.

The committee is mandated to examine and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities and panchayats keeping in view the existing constitutional framework.

Banerjee had last month written to the panel members, expressing her disagreement with the concept of simultaneous polls, contending that it would be against the basic structure of “constitutional arrangements”.
