  • Now, world-class sports amenities at Dhanbad club

    Coal city’s oldest club has donned a new avatar. Thanks to a slew of initiatives taken by its management, the Dhanbad Club, established way back in 1917, the club, now has several new facilities that will appeal to the young and sports enthusiasts.

    Located in the heart of the town, a squash court, yoga cum Zumba training center, besides an upgraded gymnasium and a billiard room, was inaugurated this evening by the Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner, Uma Shankar Singh, who is also the ex officio chairman of the club.

    Two lawn tennis courts of US open standard and a cricket alley comprising two cricket nets will also be inaugurated in the club. Later this month, the swimming pool of the club will also be upgraded.

    Talking to the media during a press conference organised at the club auditorium, prior to the inauguration, Sanjeev Beotra, secretary of the club said, “We will not have any Christmas celebration on December 25, as we will usher in the New Year December 31 following government’s guidelines. The crowd will be smaller, keeping the safety of our members in mind, unlike the previous years.”

    He added, “The club is open to our members so we have added a range of facilities including a lawn tennis arena comprising of two tennis Courts, a cricket alley comprising two nets, a squash court, etc.”

    All the facilities are of the international standard, he maintained. “For the senior members of the club and others who won’t be using the gymnasium facility we have set up a yoga-cum-Zumba training center to help them keep fit. We will be hiring yoga and Zumba trainers who would be providing training from January 1 onwards” informed Beotra.

  • Baghmara and Nirsa OCs suspended

    Senior Superintendent of Police, Dhanbad, Aseem Vikrant Minz, suspended Santosh Kumar Jha, officer-in-charge of Baghmara police station, on charges of laxity of work and dereliction of duty. The suspended officer has been shunted to the police line.

    Notably, a host of crime incidents took place in Baghmara, particularly clashes between rival groups at the different colliery sites. The violence had a connection with the war of attrition between the Baghmara MLA Dhullu Mahto and his arch-rival ‑ former water resources minister Jaleshwar Mahto.

    Talking to The Telegraph Online Dhanbad SSP, Aseem Vikrant confirmed the suspension of Baghmara’s officer-in-charge. He said, “He has been suspended on charges of laxity in work dereliction of duty and particularly concerning the violence that took place in front of attendance office block -2 office of BCCL in Bagmara yesterday.”

    In a related development, Dhanbad Deputy Commission, Uma Shankar Singh, recommended disciplinary action on Nirsa Police station officer-in-charge, Subhash Singh. The recommendation has been made by the DC, based on a probe conducted by a committee led by Additional District Magistrate (law and order) Chandan Kumar on the charges of forcible closure of 18 soft coke industries of Nirsa by Singh.

    Notably, a delegation of soft coke industry owners met the DC. During the meet, they accused Nirsa officer-in-charge of not only forcibly closing their respective units but also for having lodged an FIR against one of the soft coke industry owners when he tried to reopen the factory after the relaxation provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • Soft coke industry owners protest, seek to restart business

    A delegation of 18 soft coke industry owners of Nirsa area of Dhanbad led by former Nirsa MLA, Arup Chatterjee met the Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner Uma Shankar Singh on Monday. They sought the deputy commissioner’s intervention for relaunching of their units, lying closed for more than eight months.

    The industry owners claimed that the local police at Nirsa is not allowing them to operate their respective units and also threatens them. The police also implicated one factory owner in a false case when he tried to relaunch his unit.

    Notably, soft coke is primarily used in hotels, restaurants for cooking purposes in ovens.

    Talking to The Telegraph Online after meeting with the deputy commissioner, Chatterjee said, “The DC after meeting us expressed surprise over the restriction of permission for operating the factories and instructed the Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order) Chandan Kumar to conduct an inquiry into the issue and take appropriate action, accordingly.”

    “Even as the government has allowed the opening of all industrial units from April 20 without making any distinction on the types of industry but the local police at Nirsa led by officer-in-charge of Nirsa police station, Subhash Kumar is preventing the opening of soft coke industry owners from opening their units,” informed Kumar.
