The Indian government is redefining AI’s potential for societal benefit by releasing a comprehensive casebook focused on ‘AI and Gender Empowerment.’ This MeitY-led project, in partnership with UN Women and MoWCD, was formally introduced at the India AI Impact Summit 2026.
Spotlighting 23 AI-driven interventions from Global South regions, the publication emphasizes solutions with documented, quantifiable effects on gender parity and female upliftment. These were handpicked from 233 entries across 50+ countries via a stringent, evidence-driven vetting by a high-level committee.
Key evaluation criteria included practical implementation, measurable influence on gender dynamics, and robust results supported by data. The result is a treasure trove of innovations addressing pressing needs.
Explore the breadth: AI tools enhancing menstrual health services, promoting financial inclusion for economic autonomy, safeguarding against tech-enabled violence, bolstering women in climate-resilient agriculture, facilitating justice access, advancing education and vocational training, and providing actionable insights for advocates and leaders.
On the world stage, UN Secretary-General Guterres praised the efforts during his GenAI Expo visit to UN Women’s exhibit. He conversed with rural girls in STEM via the Westem program, a multi-stakeholder effort involving Indian states, EU, Micron, Nokia, and others. They recounted using AI to master skills, broaden learning horizons, and seize career opportunities—foreshadowing a new era of female tech pioneers.
More than a document, this casebook is a blueprint for crafting AI that prioritizes ethics and inclusion. Tailored for India and similar contexts, it equips developers and policymakers to create systems responsive to women’s realities, fostering long-term empowerment and innovation.
