A new chapter unfolds in India’s semiconductor journey. Four out of ten approved plants have transitioned to pilot production, injecting fresh momentum into the nation’s tech infrastructure. With Rs 1.6 lakh crore committed, this development was highlighted by MoS Jitin Prasada during a Lok Sabha session.
Diving into details, the lineup includes two front-end silicon fabs—one CMOS, one SiC—alongside eight back-end packaging marvels. From intricate chip designs to robust assembly and testing, every link in the chain is fortified.
The support network is expansive. 24 startup-led chip designs are underway, 16 taped out, 13 venture-funded. Academic integration shines with 65,000 engineers accessing EDA tools across 350 institutions, building a skilled workforce.
At the heart lies the Rs 76,000 crore Semicon India Program, a holistic blueprint for design-to-delivery. IT sector stats paint a rosy picture: exports leaped from $152B to $224.4B, total income from $196B to $283B in five years.
Experts foresee ISM 2.0 as the game-changer, fusing hardware innovation with software excellence to erect a formidable ecosystem. The strategic REPM initiative, allocated Rs 7,280 crore, ensures raw material security, underpinning long-term ambitions.
India’s semiconductor saga is no longer aspirational—it’s operational, heralding an era of digital self-sufficiency and global competitiveness.
