Alumnus Nandan Nilekani donates ₹315 cr to IIT(B)
New Delhi: Nandan Nilekani, co-founder and chairman of Infosys and the founding chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), on Tuesday, donated ₹315 crore to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay.
This contribution builds upon his earlier grants of ₹85 crore to the premier engineering college, bringing the cumulative worth of his help to ₹400 crore. A memorandum of understanding was signed right now in Bengaluru by Nilekani and Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay.
Nilekani joined IIT Bombay in 1973 for a bachelor’s diploma in electrical engineering. The donation marks 50 years of his affiliation with the institute. It additionally stands as one of many largest donations made by an alumnus in India, IIT Bombay stated in a press release.
Over the previous 50 years, Nilekani has stayed linked with the institute in a number of roles. He served on the board of the IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation from 1999 to 2009 and was on the board of governors from 2005 to 2011.
Nilekani’s preliminary contribution totalling as much as ₹85 crore through the years, was instrumental in setting up new hostels, co-financing the School of Information Technology, and establishing India’s first college incubator, aimed toward boosting the Indian startup ecosystem. He was awarded the distinguished Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999, adopted by an Honorary Doctorate in 2019.
Chaudhuri stated that this donation would considerably speed up the expansion of IIT Bombay and would firmly set it on a path of worldwide management. “IIT Bombay is dedicated to constructing analysis and educational excellence that may make India a frontrunner in scientific discovery and its translation in direction of fixing the urgent challenges going through humankind. Nandan’s contribution will catalyse philanthropic contributions in direction of advancing analysis and growth at universities in India,” he stated.
According to the assertion, IIT Bombay’s strategic plan for the approaching decade contains organising centres of excellence in areas equivalent to AI, inexperienced vitality, quantum computing, nurturing a deep tech startup ecosystem, and offering best-in-class analysis, residing, and educational services to college students and college.
