Speaking at a ‘Save Waqf-Save Constitution’ protest organized by Imarat-e-Sharia in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition, strongly criticized the Waqf Amendment Act 2025. He asserted that the nation belongs to every citizen, not any particular group. He addressed a sizable gathering of Muslims who had assembled to express their opposition to the Act. Yadav alleged that the Act was intended to seize Waqf properties and to disenfranchise Muslims, backward classes, and Dalits.

He stated there are efforts to undermine the country, but they would fight back. He referred to the recent Election Commission directive that would require 80 million people to re-verify their documents. He stated they would stand with them and that people of all faiths had contributed to the country’s development.

Tejashwi Yadav committed to repealing the law in Bihar if his party forms the government. Akhtarul Iman of AIMIM condemned the Act as a conspiracy targeting minorities. The opposition argues that the law undermines the Waqf Board’s independence and empowers district magistrates. The central government contends the law promotes transparency, ensures women’s participation, and prevents misuse of Waqf properties. The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case, and a decision is pending.

During the event, Tejashwi Yadav had a close call at Gandhi Maidan. As he was about to begin his speech, a drone approached him. He ducked, and a young man knocked it away. He was briefly unsettled but quickly resumed his composure.
