The peace was broken when Turkish F-16 fighter jets entered Greek airspace, breaking a 30-month silence. The aircraft, carrying air-to-air missiles, violated established air traffic regulations by entering the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR). This occurred on September 1st. This action has escalated the ongoing tensions between Greece and Turkey, who are in dispute over islands in the Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea. Despite being NATO allies, their relations are complicated, with Greece backing India, and Turkey supporting Pakistan. Adding to the tension, the event happened shortly after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accused Greece of fostering anti-Turkish sentiments, which was followed by warnings of “serious consequences.” Analysts are suggesting the violation might have been a warning connected to a potential resumption of the Greece-Cyprus underwater electrical cable project.
