Dr. Surendra Singh, a physician revered as the ‘God of the Poor’ for his extraordinary altruism and remarkably low ₹5 consultation fee, has passed away. His departure has left a profound impact on the Palamu region, where he was a symbol of accessible and compassionate healthcare for decades. Dr. Singh’s life was a testament to the power of service and empathy.

Having served tirelessly in Haidernagar, Ramna, and Nagar Untari, Dr. Singh was known for his integrity and his unwavering commitment to his patients. He actively avoided any practices that could burden patients financially, focusing instead on providing genuine care. His doors were always open, reflecting a profound respect for those seeking his help, free from any professional distance. When he later moved to Daltonganj, his reputation followed him. A private hospital approached him for his services, and though he advocated for his ₹5 fee, he eventually agreed to ₹50 to accommodate the hospital’s financial concerns, demonstrating his adaptability in continuing to serve.

Born into a simple family in Murma village, Dr. Singh intimately understood the hardships faced by the poor, having navigated his own difficult educational journey. He placed immense value on human connections and never saw his practice as a means of personal enrichment, especially from his own community. His unpretentious lifestyle mirrored his dedication to serving others. The life and work of Dr. Surendra Singh exemplify the highest ideals of the medical profession, leaving behind an enduring legacy of compassion and selfless service.
