Mumbai. ‘They don’t have to worry about the birth of a child.’ This was said by Meenakshi Sheshadri, one of the powerful actresses of the 80-90s, in response to a question about the long career of Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor. Bollywood’s ‘Damini’ Meenakshi Seshadri debuted in the 1980s and quickly rose to fame working with several A-list male stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Anil Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha. But after a successful career in Bollywood, she decided to stay away from the limelight in 1996 to focus on her personal life and settled in the USA. Now at the age of 60, Meenakshi is planning to return to the film industry again.

During a recent interview with Lehran Retro, the veteran actress elaborated on the various reasons that contribute to the long career of male actors. She said, “There are many reasons why male actors stay in the industry for a long time. Even with the generation of Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Amitabh Bachchan, they are still in the field. Another reason is that men don’t really do household chores. So, they can devote themselves completely to their careers.”

Listing the third reason, Meenakshi Seshadri said that they (actors) do not have to worry about childbirth or pregnancy or raising children. All this becomes the responsibility of the woman. So, you see, this is why these heroes are still strong.” Along with this, she added, “And, of course, people still like them. This is the most important factor.”

Meenakshi Seshadri worked in nearly 70 films during her 13-year career in the industry. Her notable works include blockbusters like Hero, Meri Jung, Shahenshah and the National Award-winning Damini. In 1998, she made a guest appearance in the film Swami Vivekananda and later appeared in the 2016 film Ghayal: Once Again. Now, after a gap of 27 years, Meenakshi is all set to return to the silver screen.
