Peter Navarro, formerly a trade advisor to Donald Trump, has stepped up his criticism of India’s trade policies and its oil purchases from Russia. These comments come despite the ongoing efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US government to emphasize the importance of their bilateral relationship. Speaking on CNBC, Navarro discussed the stalled trade deal, noting India’s high tariffs and non-tariff barriers. He suggested that India is now participating in negotiations. Navarro accused Indian refiners of taking advantage of discounted Russian oil, implying that this action supports Russia’s war efforts. He also commented on PM Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump has expressed optimism about the ongoing trade negotiations between the US and India and plans to speak with Prime Minister Modi soon, looking forward to a successful conclusion for both nations. In response, PM Modi emphasized the strong friendship and partnership between India and the US, expressing confidence in the trade negotiations’ potential to strengthen their relationship.
