Maharashtra’s political firmament darkened today with news of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s death in a devastating plane crash. The government responded swiftly, proclaiming a three-day state-wide mourning period from January 28-30. Government operations are fully halted, and flags drape at half-staff in solemn tribute.

CM Devendra Fadnavis, overcome with grief, abandoned his commitments to head to Baramati with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Addressing the press, he painted Pawar as an everyman leader, celebrated for his humility and dedication to public service.

‘His sudden exit leaves an indelible void—not just politically, but personally. We shared struggles and triumphs; his developmental legacy endures,’ Fadnavis stated. Solidarity was extended to the grieving family and NCP cadre, with promises of assistance in their time of need.

Arrangements will be finalized after family meetings in Baramati, Fadnavis confirmed. He has briefed PM Modi and HM Shah, who conveyed their anguish over the incident.

In a deeply moving social media message, Fadnavis wrote: ‘Unbearable loss—Ajit Dada, my brother-in-arms, perished in crash. Words fail me. A colossal personal and statewide tragedy. En route to Baramati; all programs off.’ Condolences extended to other victims’ kin as well.

The shutdown of state affairs symbolizes collective bereavement. This unforeseen event reverberates through Maharashtra, prompting reflections on Pawar’s enduring influence and the path forward for his party and the alliance.
