President Donald Trump has expressed an openness to talks with Iran, potentially leading to an agreement, after a ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Iran. The US President stated that talks between the US and Iran could happen next week, even though Iran has not indicated a change in its nuclear program development. The US and Israel claim to have damaged Iranian nuclear sites, but Iran’s reports differ on the level of damage.
At the NATO summit, Trump stated that an agreement may or may not be signed. “We’re going to talk to them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement. I don’t know. To me, I don’t think it’s that necessary,” Trump stated.
Trump also noted that Iran is currently focused on recovery rather than uranium enrichment. US envoy Dorothy Shea had previously stated that US strikes had met the goal of weakening Iran’s nuclear weapon production capacity. Iran has yet to confirm any upcoming talks with the US. Previously, Trump announced that he requested US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to draft an agreement for Iran to sign after the ceasefire seemed to be holding up well.
