The arrival of Uma Chetry, the first woman from Assam to compete in the ICC Women’s World Cup, has ignited a contentious discussion regarding the official reception she received. Chetry, a young wicketkeeper-batter, returned to Guwahati having contributed to India’s campaign on the world stage, a feat that brought immense pride. However, reports suggest that no government officials were present at the airport to greet her upon her late-night landing.
According to the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union, their members and a small group of fans were the only ones present to welcome Chetry, decorating her with garlands and the traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’. The union has vehemently criticized the perceived lack of state recognition, questioning why such a historic achievement wasn’t met with a more substantial official welcome, drawing comparisons to how other athletes have been honored.
Political figures have amplified the criticism directed at the state government. Opposition leaders have seized on the issue, arguing that the government missed an opportunity to publicly celebrate an athlete who has brought national and international attention to Assam and the Northeast. They emphasized her inspirational story of overcoming challenges to reach the pinnacle of world cricket.
Official responses from the BCCI and the Assam Cricket Association have sought to clarify the situation. The BCCI Secretary indicated that complexities related to the players’ post-victory travel schedules and last-minute arrangements might have contributed to the confusion. He also noted that holding large celebrations might have been inappropriate given the state’s mourning period for a respected singer.
The ACA President stated that the association’s focus remains on cricket development and infrastructure, and that they had not received advance notification of Chetry’s arrival. Chetry herself, when approached by the media, remained gracious and composed, stating she didn’t feel slighted and understood that officials might have had other pressing engagements. She expressed her profound happiness at achieving her World Cup dream.
Her coach spoke about her dedication and the hope that she would receive the full honors she deserved. Following the controversy, the state’s Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare met with Chetry for an official felicitation. The Chief Minister’s office later shared her success story, highlighting her potential to inspire young athletes. Meanwhile, her home village organized a celebratory event, honoring her journey from a challenging environment to global sporting success.
