Bollywood has a rich history of portraying complex romantic relationships, often venturing into the territory of obsessive love. With the release of ‘Tere Ishk Mein’ featuring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon, it’s timely to look back at actors who have delivered unforgettable performances as characters consumed by an all-encompassing, sometimes dangerous, affection.

These characters, driven by an intensity that often blurs the lines of sanity and devotion, have become cornerstones of Hindi cinema’s dramatic repertoire. Their stories, while sometimes unsettling, are undeniably compelling and offer a deep look into the extremes of human emotion.

Shah Rukh Khan, in his formative years, became synonymous with obsessive characters. His performances in ‘Darr’ (1993), ‘Baazigar’ (1993), and ‘Anjaam’ (1994) were groundbreaking, showcasing a darker side of romance that captivated audiences and set a new standard for anti-hero portrayals.

Shahid Kapoor’s portrayal of the titular character in ‘Kabir Singh’ ignited considerable discussion. The film centered on a charismatic but deeply troubled surgeon whose love for his partner morphs into a destructive obsession. Kapoor’s raw and unflinching performance captured the character’s tumultuous inner world.

Ajay Devgn delivered a masterfully understated yet terrifying performance in ‘Deewangee’ (2002). As a musician whose mind is a precarious balance of innocence and danger, Devgn conveyed obsession through chilling pauses and sudden, impactful shifts in demeanor, creating a truly memorable villain.

Ranveer Singh consistently brings a potent blend of passion and intensity to his roles. He excels in portraying characters where love is an overwhelming force, often intertwined with ambition, ego, and an unyielding desire for control.

Dhanush’s performance in ‘Raanjhanaa’ remains a powerful testament to depicting obsessive love with profound humanity. His portrayal of Kundan, a young man whose love is both sincere and overwhelming, resonated deeply with audiences, highlighting the emotional complexities of his character. He is poised to delve into such intense emotional territories once again in ‘Tere Ishk Mein’.
