The city of Srinagar buzzed with excitement this past Sunday as the Kashmir Marathon 2025 successfully concluded its second edition, drawing an impressive crowd of over 1,500 runners. From the picturesque Polo View market, athletes embarked on journeys of endurance and unity, with participants representing a broad spectrum of India and 11 international nations, including runners from Germany, Denmark, the USA, Ethiopia, Kenya, Japan, and Sri Lanka.

Organized collaboratively by the Department of Tourism, Kashmir, and the J&K Sports Council, the marathon showcased the region’s commitment to fostering sports. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was a prominent figure, not only flagging off the event but also completing the half-marathon. He shared his personal achievement and commended the collective effort of all participants on social media.

The ceremonial start at 6 am saw the Chief Minister, alongside fellow officials and cheering crowds, encourage the runners. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, a guest at the event, was effusive in his praise for the marathon’s atmosphere and turnout. He remarked, “What a beautiful morning this is… just look at the spirit of people running for Kashmir, for India. It’s truly wonderful,” emphasizing the event’s role in promoting unity, fitness, and peace. Shetty also noted the returning charm of the Valley and its potential to host more large-scale sporting events, hinting at upcoming activities in February.

The marathon provided participants with challenging full (42 km) and half (21 km) routes. The prize pool amounted to Rs. 25 lakh, adding to the competitive spirit. The stunning natural beauty surrounding Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Range offered an unparalleled, scenic backdrop, distinguishing the Kashmir Marathon as one of the most captivating races in the country.
