The Uttar Pradesh government’s directive mandating that shopkeepers along the Kanwar Yatra route display their licenses and owner nameplates has triggered strong reactions from opposition parties. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak defended the decision, emphasizing consumer rights. Senior Minister OP Rajbhar said that the government’s focus is on ensuring a peaceful festival. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed denounced the move as a diversionary tactic, while AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi raised concerns about the new requirements. The Kanwar Yatra, which started on June 10, is a pilgrimage where devotees carry water to offer to Lord Shiva.
