The United States has ramped up its travel warnings to the maximum, imploring Americans in Venezuela to board the next available flight out. Saturday’s bulletin from the Consular Affairs Bureau stresses that with international air travel resuming, departure is feasible—but time is critical.

Venezuela’s streets are lawless, patrolled by ‘colectivos,’ armed collectives enforcing regime loyalty through roadblocks and invasive checks. They’re zeroing in on US passports or sympathies, heightening peril for expatriates.

Officials recommend utmost road wariness and constant airline monitoring. At Travel Advisory Level 4, Venezuela is off-limits, plagued by arbitrary imprisonments, custodial abuses, terrorist threats, kidnappings, legal whims, criminality, civil disorder, and healthcare collapse.

Context is key: a US special forces raid on January 3 apprehended President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, igniting international outrage and fears of reprisals.

Counterbalancing this, President Donald Trump on Friday floated near-term summits with Venezuelan counterparts. In press remarks, he painted a picture of mending ties: “Very soon, I’ll sit down with Venezuelan representatives. US-Venezuela government relations are better now. We’re in direct talks to stabilize things and communicating effectively with the people.”

The president suggested the military maneuver pressured parties into talks, dodging broader war. Americans ignore the ‘leave now’ order at their peril, as diplomatic glimmers offer no immediate safety net.
