The U.S. State Department has initiated a broad visa cancellation program, revoking 85,000 visas since January. This substantial action signifies a robust commitment to national security and the strict enforcement of immigration policies. The administration has made it clear that this initiative is a priority and will continue to be pursued vigorously. A significant number of these cancellations, exceeding 8,000, were for international students. Common grounds for revocation included criminal offenses like DUI, theft, and assault, which collectively account for a large portion of the total. While not all reasons are publicly disclosed, past cancellations have been attributed to alleged ties to terrorism and other visa violations. The government has also taken action against individuals expressing support for controversial events and has increased monitoring of students participating in political demonstrations. This intensified scrutiny is part of a broader plan to establish a continuous vetting system for all visa holders. The administration has also expanded its review process for incoming visa applications, including for essential employment visas, to ensure stricter compliance with U.S. laws and regulations. This comprehensive approach aims to reinforce immigration controls and ensure the integrity of the U.S. visa system.
