The decision to include Vaishnavi Sharma in India’s T20I squad against Sri Lanka is a direct result of her outstanding performances in domestic cricket, according to head coach Amol Muzumdar. The selectors, led by Amita Sharma, recognized her potential and consistency.

Sharma has quickly adapted to the international T20 format. After making her debut, she displayed promising signs with the ball, including a valuable spell in the second T20I. Her background with the U-19 World Cup-winning team, where she was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, undoubtedly played a part in her elevation to the senior squad.

“Domestic performance was rewarded by the selectors. So real credit to them,” Muzumdar stated, underscoring the importance of domestic form. Sharma’s statistical achievements are impressive, with 21 wickets in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy and leading the wicket-takers list with 12 dismissals in the Senior Women’s Inter Zonal T20s.

Despite her WPL 2026 auction status, Sharma has delivered impressive performances against Sri Lanka, showcasing composure and skill. Muzumdar described her as “calm, collective” and “promising,” highlighting her mental fortitude.

The Indian team is strategizing for the 2026 T20 World Cup, aiming to build a stable and settled squad. “We try to be as settled as possible,” Muzumdar said, indicating a proactive approach to team composition.

Muzumdar confirmed that the team is continuously striving for improvement across all departments. “We consistently speak about improving all three facets of the game, not just fielding. In fact, there is a fourth one now, which is fitness,” he explained.

The coach also observed a more upbeat and happier environment within the squad following their ODI World Cup triumph. He acknowledged Sri Lanka as a strong opponent and stressed the importance of respecting every team they face.
