Bangladesh is facing renewed unrest following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the anti-Sheikh Hasina movement, who passed away in Singapore. Hadi had been receiving treatment after being shot by unidentified attackers in Dhaka’s Paltan area while traveling in a rickshaw. His condition deteriorated, leading to his transfer to Singapore General Hospital, where he died. The shooting itself triggered strong political reactions, particularly after the announcement of the parliamentary election schedule. Hadi, associated with the Inqilab Manch and a significant participant in the 2024 ‘July uprising’ that led to Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, was actively campaigning when the attack occurred. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has strongly denounced the election-related violence, calling it ‘unacceptable’ and a threat to the nation’s stability. In tribute to Hadi, a declared ‘fearless fighter,’ Yunus has ordered a one-day state mourning. The national flag will be flown at half-mast nationwide and at Bangladesh’s overseas missions. The incident underscores the volatile political climate in Bangladesh, with authorities vowing to prevent any disruption to the electoral process. Hadi’s death is considered a significant blow to the opposition and the ongoing democratic struggle in the country.
