Uttar Pradesh is poised to elevate its global tourism profile through an innovative pact with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture, emphasizing wellness, golf, Buddhist trails, and more. The landmark discussions in Lucknow, presided over by Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh, marked a pivotal step in cultural diplomacy.

At the heart of the talks was UP’s storied Buddhist heritage, with sacred sites like Sarnath, Kushinagar, and Kapilvastu offering profound spiritual experiences. Singh stressed that shared cultural values form the strongest pillar of India-Japan friendship, capable of sustaining long-term economic growth via tourism.

Looking ahead, a ‘UP Festival’ in Japan by mid-2025 could spotlight the state’s diverse attractions, from ancient temples to modern amenities. Amrit Abhijat, Additional Chief Secretary, connected Japanese concepts like Ikigai and Wabi-Sabi to India’s holistic traditions, advocating joint ventures in wellness and contemplative travel.

Sports tourism took center stage with mentions of elite golf facilities in key UP cities, alongside calls for specialized packages featuring cuisine exchanges, literary immersions, and learning expeditions. ‘Tourism today demands personalized, meaningful journeys,’ Abhijat remarked.

Yamanashi Deputy Governor Junichi Ishidera pointed to the MoU’s success since December 2024, with his province acting as UP’s strategic hub in Japan. An upcoming 200-strong delegation in August 2025 will further accelerate collaborations. As these ties flourish, expect a surge in Japanese footfall, enriching UP’s economy and cultural tapestry.
