A devastating 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on Sunday night, causing widespread destruction and resulting in over 800 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 8 km, highlighting the seismic vulnerability of the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

Over the past five years, this area has been plagued by more than 30 earthquakes, causing the tragic loss of over 2,000 lives. This article seeks to explore the key factors contributing to the frequent earthquakes in this region while documenting significant seismic events from 2021 through 2025.

    **1. Tectonic Plate Interactions**
Afghanistan is located in a region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates are colliding. The Indian plate is continually moving northward and colliding with the Eurasian plate. These collisions generate the earthquakes that frequently occur in this area. The same process also causes the gradual uplift of the Himalayan mountain range, increasing the region’s susceptibility to seismic activity.

**2. Deep-Seated Earthquakes in the Hindu Kush Mountains**
The Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan is characterized by frequent deep-focus earthquakes (approximately 100,000 km). These deeper earthquakes often cause less surface damage. However, when the focus is shallower (e.g., 10-20 km), the impact can be significantly more destructive. In addition, earthquakes with a depth of a few hundred kilometers can result in catastrophic damage.

**3. Presence of Active Fault Lines**
Fault lines represent fractures or cracks within the earth’s crust. Afghanistan has numerous active fault lines, including the Chaman Fault, the Hari Rud Fault, and the Pamir Thrust Fault. Continuous tectonic activity along these fault lines is a major contributor to the frequent earthquakes in the region.
