The peace summit for Gaza in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, saw an unexpected participant: FIFA President Gianni Infantino, standing alongside US President Donald Trump. While political leaders and diplomats were expected, Infantino’s presence generated significant interest.

Infantino clarified that President Trump personally invited him to attend. He expressed FIFA’s commitment to supporting the peace efforts, saying, “FIFA is here to help, to assist and to put ourselves at disposal for whatever we can do to make sure that this peace process comes to fruition.” This appearance reflects Infantino’s increasing engagement with the sensitive Israel-Gaza conflict.

Earlier, Infantino had actively advocated for football’s contribution to peace in the Middle East, particularly ahead of World Cup qualifiers. Following the recent ceasefire, he lauded the US-brokered deal, crediting President Trump with playing a fundamental and crucial role, even proposing him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

During the summit, Infantino highlighted football’s potential as a force for hope in Gaza. He pledged FIFA’s support for rebuilding the region’s football infrastructure as part of the post-war rebuilding efforts. This commitment involves restoring pitches, providing equipment, training, and establishing a dedicated fund to help rebuild football facilities in Palestine. Infantino underscored the importance of football in providing hope for children.

The FIFA President and former President Trump have maintained a public relationship since 2018. Their connection has been visible through shared platforms, including a meeting where Infantino presented Trump with a replica World Cup trophy. Infantino’s recent decision to move to Miami, a city associated with Trump, suggests a continued strategic proximity for collaboration on football-related initiatives and future public engagements.
