Kiplin Doriga, a 30-year-old Papua New Guinea international wicketkeeper, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment after admitting to robbery on the island of Jersey. The cricketer was in Jersey for the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League when the offense occurred. On August 25th, during the early morning hours, Doriga assaulted a woman on Hilary Street in St Helier, punching her and taking her phone. The police investigation was rapid, leading to Doriga’s arrest later that day. He pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery before Jersey Magistrate’s Court on August 27th. The sentencing took place in Jersey’s Royal Court on November 28th. Law enforcement acknowledged the prompt action taken to identify and apprehend Doriga, as well as recover the stolen item, emphasizing their dedication to ensuring public safety. Doriga had already played several matches for his team prior to the incident. This conviction brings attention to athlete conduct off the field and the potential repercussions during international competitions, raising pertinent questions for cricket boards regarding player discipline.
