The current U.S. administration has revoked close to 80,000 non-immigrant visas since the start of the year, reflecting a significant increase in immigration enforcement. The reasons for these cancellations span criminal offenses, including driving under the influence, assault, and theft, as well as violations of immigration regulations and foreign policy objectives. Notably, DUI-related revocations exceeded 16,000, with assault and theft also contributing substantially to the overall numbers. Concurrently, the U.S. has implemented more stringent vetting procedures for visa applicants, enhancing social media checks and background investigations. In a recent action, over 6,000 student visas were cancelled due to overstays or breaches of visa conditions, with some cases linked to alleged affiliations with terrorist groups. U.S. diplomats are now under instruction to closely scrutinize applicants for any signs of anti-American sentiment or political engagement, underscoring the administration’s commitment to national security and upholding its foreign policy agenda.
