American Soldier Dies During Controlled Detonation of Iranian One‑Way Drone in Northern Iraq

WASHINGTON, July 20 – A U.S. service member was killed on Sunday while carrying out a controlled detonation of an explosive device linked to an Iranian one‑way attack drone that had landed in northern Iraq. The operation was intended to render the device harmless.

CentCom confirmed that another member of the team suffered minor wounds and is currently receiving medical care for those injuries.

The same day, the U.S. Army recovered human remains at the incident site. Officials said forensic analysis to verify identity is still underway.

The announcement follows a previous statement on Saturday that two American soldiers had died after an Iranian strike in Jordan on Friday, leaving a third service member unaccounted for. The command emphasized that further information would be released only after the families are informed.

On the maritime front, the United States maintained its naval pressure on Iran, rerouting six commercial ships and halting the progress of one vessel.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps asserted that it shot down a U.S. MQ‑9 Reaper drone over Ahvaz on Sunday, using its integrated air‑defence system. The IRGC also reported attacks on a U.S. base in Jordan, a fuel dock in Kuwait, and a data centre in Bahrain, signalling heightened tensions in the region.
