A UK-based Indian national’s transit through Shanghai Pudong International Airport turned into a significant diplomatic incident when she was detained for 18 hours. Prema Wangjom Thongdok, originally from Arunachal Pradesh, was reportedly flagged by Chinese immigration for her passport listing her birthplace in the disputed region. Officials allegedly claimed Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory, invalidating her Indian travel document and subjecting her to harassment. Thongdok recounted instances of being denied food and facing communication barriers due to restricted internet access in China. Her onward flight to Japan was also denied despite holding a valid visa. Following intervention by Indian embassy officials, the situation was de-escalated, and Thongdok was able to continue her journey. India has officially protested the detention, labeling the reasoning as ‘ludicrous’ and emphasizing the indisputable Indian sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh.
