The government of Balochistan has extended Section 144 for another 15 days, which maintains restrictions on public assemblies and activities until August 31. This decision, officials explain, is a result of heightened security apprehensions during August. The restrictions are in anticipation of increased activities from armed groups, especially around key dates such as August 11, 14, and 26. The extended measures continue to prohibit motorcycle pillion riding, face coverings, and gatherings of five or more individuals. Nighttime public transport has also been limited since August 13. Additionally, mobile internet services (3G and 4G) have been suspended throughout all 36 districts of Balochistan since August 6, and the blackout is scheduled to last until August 31. Despite a ruling from the Balochistan High Court to reinstate internet in most areas, services remain suspended. This has significantly impacted communication, education, employment, business, and news distribution. Students have expressed concerns about their academic year, and journalists report that the shutdown is hindering the free exchange of information. Civil society organizations have called on the government to comply with the court’s directive and restore connectivity. Meanwhile, a curfew has been in place in the Nasirabad area of Kech district, leading to closed markets and residents confined to their homes, causing shortages of essential items. The All Parties Kech alliance has condemned the curfew, and similar issues have emerged in other areas, including Gwadar. The government justifies these restrictions as essential for preventing militant attacks, while political parties and human rights groups argue that they constitute collective punishment, disproportionately affecting civilians.
