Bangladesh reels from a catastrophic train-bus smash-up in Comilla that snuffed out 12 lives and left 20 battling injuries. At 2:45 AM Sunday, the unguarded Padua Market crossing became a graveyard when the ‘Mamun Special’ express collided head-on with a Laxmipur-bound bus.

The high-speed impact propelled the bus nearly a kilometer, embedding it in the train’s front. Debris scattered far, and the air thick with dust and despair. Seven men, three women, and two children were among the dead, per Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam’s account.

Five victims died instantly; nine followed in hospitals despite valiant medical interventions. Of 18 hospitalized injured, eight cling to recovery. Multi-agency rescuers—police, fire services, highways—braved the mangled mass to save lives.

No gatekeeper was on duty, leading to suspensions of Mehdi Hasan and Helal Uddin. Dual railway committees probe the lapse. Services on Dhaka-Chattogram line froze for hours, resuming post-clearance around 8 AM.

Media reports paint a grim picture: passengers’ wails drew villagers who aided extractions. Fire officials retrieved three corpses initially. This incident exposes vulnerabilities in Bangladesh’s rail network, strained by heavy traffic and lax oversight.

Nationwide, voices demand urgent reforms—automated signals, barriers, and training. While probes continue, the human cost lingers, urging a safety renaissance to prevent history’s cruel repeat.
