Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison by the Supreme Court for his role in a coup plot. The court found him guilty of attempting to undermine the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after the 2022 elections. Four out of five judges supported the conviction. The sentence was reduced considering Bolsonaro’s age and health, with the potential maximum sentence being higher. Bolsonaro, who has denied any involvement in the plot, is currently under house arrest. He intends to appeal the verdict to the full Supreme Court. The conspiracy aimed to prevent Lula from taking office.
