A ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump quickly deteriorated as Cambodia and Thailand resumed hostilities and exchanged accusations of initiating artillery attacks. The reported intervention by Trump, which purportedly secured an agreement for peace talks, was overshadowed by the resumption of fighting just hours later. The recent clashes represent the most intense fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors in over a decade, resulting in a death toll exceeding 30 and mass evacuations of over 200,000 people from border regions. Cambodia supported Trump’s call for an immediate ceasefire. Thailand stated it couldn’t begin talks while Cambodia was allegedly targeting its civilians. Despite the proposed talks, artillery exchanges were reported on Sunday morning. Both nations have blamed each other for the attacks. Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence accused Thailand of shelling and ground assaults, including targeting historical temple complexes. Meanwhile, the Thai army said Cambodian forces fired shots into several areas, including near civilian homes, and were mobilizing long-range rocket launchers. The long-standing border dispute involves undemarcated points along the 817km border and the ownership of the Ta Moan Thom and Preah Vihear temples.
