The United States’ deployment of the Typhon missile system in Japan has been met with strong disapproval from both China and Russia. The demonstration on Monday has escalated tensions, with both nations voicing their concerns. This marks another instance of the US deploying the missile system, following similar deployments in the Philippines, and its use by Australia. The Typhon system was featured during the ‘Resolute Dragon 2025’ military exercise, with the participation of 20,000 US and Japanese troops. The system’s capabilities include launching Tomahawk cruise missiles, boasting a range of 1,600 kilometers, as well as SM-6 interceptors. This range allows the missiles to potentially strike targets within China’s eastern border and some areas of Russia. A commander in charge of the task force noted the strategic benefits of deploying diverse systems, and that swift deployment of the Typhon advances operational goals. China and Russia have both accused the US of escalating an arms race.
