Ex-Proud Boy says group ‘celebrated’ violence forward of US Capitol riot

A former member of the Proud Boys group testified on Tuesday in opposition to the far-right group’s former chief and different members, telling a Washington jury members anticipated a “civil war” forward of the Jan. 6, 2021 riot on the U.S. Capitol.
Matthew Greene, a New York resident and veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, mentioned his interactions with different members of the group gave him the impression that the group was ready to make use of drive to maintain former U.S. Republican President Donald Trump in workplace following his 2020 election defeat.

Greene’s testimony was a key second within the trial of Proud Boys former chief Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and 4 different members of the group – Dominic Pezzola, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl– who’re charged with a number of felonies together with seditious conspiracy.
Greene mentioned Pezzola was praised following a violent incident at a December 2020 rally in Washington, D.C. Pezzola boasted that he responded to the stabbing of a Proud Boy member by bashing the assailant’s head with a motorbike helmet, Greene mentioned.

Lawyers for the defendants have argued that there was no plan to storm the Capitol and Proud Boys management directed members at earlier rallies to solely reply to left-wing counter protesters in self-defense.

He described a “rising anger” within the crowd as Proud Boy leaders led the group in chants outdoors the Capitol.

Greene pleaded responsible to conspiracy and obstruction of an official continuing in December 2021 for his position within the assault. He agreed to cooperate with U.S. prosecutors.
