A targeted Israeli strike outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza resulted in the deaths of five Al Jazeera journalists on Sunday, in what is considered one of the most deadly assaults on media personnel in the conflict. The victims included Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soon after claimed that Anas al-Sharif was the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and was involved in rocket attacks. The IDF said that they had evidence including rosters, training lists, and salary records to prove his Hamas ties. The Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the killings. The CPJ said that at least 186 journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023. This attack happened hours after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that he would let more foreign journalists into the Gaza Strip. Shortly before his death, Anas al-Sharif posted about the escalating Israeli aggression in Gaza City. His final message, posted to his social media after his death, said that he believed Israel had killed him and silenced his voice.
