Government Backtracks on Social Media Ban After Violent Clashes in Nepal

The Nepalese government has withdrawn its ban on social media following intense and violent protests across the nation. Minister Prithivi Subba Gurung announced the lifting of the ban after an emergency cabinet meeting. The ‘Gen Z’ group spearheaded large demonstrations, and some protesters breached the parliament complex, leading to clashes. Law enforcement used force to disperse the crowds. With the government’s change of stance, social media platforms like Facebook, X, and WhatsApp have been reactivated. The initial ban was a result of the platforms not completing the necessary registration process.
