Indian-origin lady serving 14 years in Singapore jail for fatally abusing maid

By Press Trust of India: A 64-year-old Indian-origin lady in Singapore, serving a jail time period for fatally abusing her daughter’s Myanmarese maid, admitted in courtroom on Thursday to asking her son-in-law to take away a CCTV that held proof of the crimes.

Prema S Naraynasamy is presently serving a 14-year sentence for her function within the abuse of 24-year-old Myanmar nationwide Piang Ngaih Don, who died of a mind harm with extreme blunt trauma to her neck in 2016 after 14 months of repeated abuse, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

Prema’s daughter, Gaiyathiri, was sentenced to 30 years in jail in 2021 for her involvement within the maid abuse and loss of life.

Prema pleaded responsible on Thursday to 1 depend of instigating her policeman son-in-law, 44-year-old Kevin Chelvam, to trigger proof of the offences to vanish by eradicating the recorder.

The prosecution mentioned Prema knew that her and Gaiyathiri’s actions had been captured by closed-circuit tv recorder (CCTV) cameras in the home and directed Chelvam to dismantle the recorder from its energy supply to eliminate it as she didn’t need police to pay money for the footage.

Chelvam, initially reluctant to take action, allegedly proceeded on Prema’s insistence and handed the system to her, and upon being requested by a police officer to provide the CCTV footage, lied that there was no footage, the prosecution mentioned.

Prema slipped the CCTV recorder into her daughter-in-law’s bag, who got here whereas the police had been nonetheless on the premises, and informed her in Tamil, “I have kept something in your bag, do something with it,” the report mentioned.

The daughter-in-law gave Prema’s son the recorder, who then requested a pal to maintain it. His pal agreed and took the CCTV recorder from him, not realizing what its relevance to police investigations was.

The recorder was recovered when cops went to Prema’s son and daughter-in-law’s dwelling asking for it, and the son obtained his pal to return the merchandise.

The prosecution has requested for no less than three years in jail for Prema, whereas the defence lawyer requested for between 18 and 24 months in jail as a substitute.

The decide mentioned she wanted extra time to think about the sentencing and adjourned the case to a later date, the report mentioned.
